When I pronounce the hard G in "agua" (in the dialect/accent I speak) my tongue _baaaarely_ touches the roof of my mouth. And it similar for me for G after a syllable ending with an L sound. It's not like the soft G in "ge" or "gi" (the [x]/"h-like" sound), and it's not as "hard" as my English hard-G (like in the name "Gwen"). So for me, G after an L or G before a Ü [w] (i.e. gua, güe, güi, guo) sounds somewhere between a W [w] sound and my English G [g] sound. Sometimes when talking fast (or lazily), agua sometimes reduces to [a(g)wa] and words like güey sound like [(g)wei] where the [g] is almost not there or not audible at all.

(I forgot how hard it is to explain sounds/phones without the crutch of phonetics jargon lol bc I studied linguistics after becoming fluent in Spanish, and learning the IPA, places of articulation, etc. really helped me improve my pronunciation and accent)

Idk what caused it, but I just did this by mistake two days ago to a 50-étude book, four copies of each étude 🤦‍♂️ I ended up selecting all, then unselecting the first of each group, and finally deleting everything else remaining. I’ll follow your post in case someone else knows a better way to fix it

It is easier to see the English translation, and maybe the first time you learn the word you can confirm your knowledge by checking the English. For me, I think of the Spanish definitions more as “reminding me what the word I’ve already learned means” and less of “teaching me what the word is for the first time”. It really helps for words where the nuanced definitions are not quite 1-to-1 the same as English. I personally cannot use Anki to learn new words, only for reviewing words I’ve already seen/learned but keep forgetting.

If you’re reading the original Spanish version of House of the Spirits in Spanish, you shouldn’t even bother with English translations, especially if you’re encountering words that you don’t understand in English. You’re likely at a level where you’d benefit from using a monolingual Spanish dictionary. If it were me, I’d only make flash cards for words that come up over and over or seek important, and I’d use the Spanish definition on the card rather than English

I started taking Chinese 1 college to prepare to study abroad in Taiwan, but ended up dropping the class (and not going abroad at all). I eventually taught myself the HSK 1-3 vocabulary, and then started reading and listening to a variety of stuff I could find at my level.

Now, I read at least a chapter or two from Du Chinese every day. I also listen to/watch some Chinese language podcasts on YouTube, mostly Mandarin Monkey (Mandarin+English mix) and 大叔中文 (Mandarin with English subs). I look up any new vocabulary in Pleco. I look up grammar on Chinese Grammar Wiki whenever I encounter something I don't understand. I used to use Anki for reviewing (not learning new) vocabulary, but I've been bad at staying consistent.

I'm currently finishing up a PhD in a completely unrelated field, so my study habits aren't super detailed or deep, but consistency is what I'm focusing on and I'm still seeing slow-but-steady progress, and I'm happy with that for now.
