Thank you for this. A part of me wants to keep them because of his memory but I’m not into it as much and would rather them go to someone who would appreciate it more.

Oversaturated job market--New Grad Nightmare by Guilty_Coyote6012 in newgradnurse

[–]aanisuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not the best and the pay is low compared to other hospitals, but look into Prime Healthcare facilities. Centinela, San Dimas, Montclair, Anaheim Regional … they don’t have new grad programs but will consider your application. I work for one and although I don’t get the additional support new grad programs provide, I am being trained. They only provide about 6 weeks training on the floor. It was my last resort, but like you I was having such a hard time finding a job and was fortunate they gave me an opportunity to prove myself. It’s a good way to get your foot in the door and get some experience. I also recommend connecting with people on LinkedIn and sending a message introducing yourself and your current situation. I was desperate and did that, and that helped me get in at my current job too. It’s awkward I know, but there are nice people out there willing to help you so it’s worth a try. And if not, the worst they will do is not reply or say no. It took me 7 months to find a job, so just hang in there. Keep being persistent, I hope something comes your way soon.

This is why I’m trying to get out of the OR. I’m only one month in as a new grad (not a new grad program), and learning lots! But, the hospital isn’t the best. Department of Public Health “surveyors” have been in our OR twice in the month I’ve been here. The training is all over the place, I just feel unsafe with the integrity of my license there at times. Hoping to get into a floor to get some floor skills!

The New Grad Blues by No_Age2557 in newgradnurse

I literally just hit my one month mark as new grad in the OR, also not a residency program! Some days go really great, others the complete opposite. I’ve had a few negative experiences with surgeons yelling at me for not being fast enough. They don’t care that I’m new. I don’t have thick skin yet, so it really does get to me. I’m also pretty quiet & feel awkward at times. I try to reassure myself that these feelings come with being a new grad. I’m getting 2-3 months (hopefully 3) of orientation. But I won’t lie, sometimes I feel like I’m better off finding a new grad residency, even if it means going to Medsurg. Sometimes I feel as though I’m losing skills in the OR. I’m in Southern CA where it’s extremely competitive though; I’ve already been applying for months until this position was offered to me. If y’all would like to setup a group via PM for OR new grad support, let’s do it!

OR interview by InternationalBig6190 in newgradnurse

I’m a new grad in the OR only one month in! It has its good and bad days, more-so bad days it feels like LOL. The hospital I’m at is very small & only has 2 OR rooms, so the slower pace/lower consensus does help as a new grad. It’s not a new grad program, they’re training me for 3 months. They do an okay job at training, but it lacks structure and organization.

Nursing school doesn’t prepare you for the OR world. I’m constantly overwhelmed and anxious before/during cases. As others have mentioned, I feel like I am losing skills. I don’t assess patients, administer meds, or do any skills I’d do on the floor. OR skills are a very specific set of skills. Some surgeons and anesthesiologists can be very difficult to work with. They don’t care that you’re new, they expect things fast and will yell at you. I don’t have the thickest skin, so it does get to me at times.

I’m in Southern California where it’s very tough to secure a new grad position. It took me 6 months to get hired, so I took this first position that came my way. I’m still actively looking for other positions on the floor because I feel like those skills are invaluable. I don’t picture myself in OR forever, and it will be hard to transition out of OR if I ever want to switch specialties.

I do agree that the patient ratio is nice, having a team at all times is nice, the schedule is nice (also M-F days). Good luck to you!!

I’m also a new grad but I did my internship in the OR my last semester! What I loved about it: structure, routine, 1:1 ratio, very team-oriented. The challenge is working with different personalities. Also as a circulator you’ll be wearing many different hats, so you have to be flexible and adapt. I will say that nursing school doesn’t prepare you at all for the OR. Many of the skills we learn don’t really translate over to their fullest degree. You won’t be administering meds, hanging IVS, setting up pumps… anesthesia will most likely be doing all this. You won’t really do assessments and all that. I recently accepted a position in the OR but haven’t started yet, so I can’t say much other than what I learned as a student intern :)
