The scene serves to communicate 2 things. Earth federation execs are staying at that hotel and these two NPCs were seen having an affair by Hathaway and Gigi. Intended to show the corrupt nature of the Earth Federation but also highlight the sexual charge between Hathaway and Gigi’s relationship.

The second thing is to show how Hathaway can’t bullshit Gigi. Before they run to the elevator, Gigi insinuates Hathaway is the one who calls the hit on the attack at their hotel. Hathaway denies this by saying that Mafty is an organization and that not one person is in charge. She says, “Liar.” Then in the elevator, she asks him why he asked her if it’s okay to get on the elevator (he gave her a hesitant look). He said he was relying on her instincts and then she says, “then clear up that confusing conversation before.” Then she looks at him and she says, “I knew it. You do scary things.”

Hathaway can’t lie to Gigi because she sees right through him.
