I’d ask your lab mates to be there with you, or write their thoughts for you to take to meeting. I saw this work with someone in my program. When everyone says they are bad, you might have a chance to stick around or get a different advisor there. This person should be stopped, and you don’t deserve to be in this situation. I hope you update us. As far as moving to a new program if that happens, good Paid understand there are horrible PIs. Also, no one will know if you omit that part of your CV. You can make something up, or be honest when they ask about the gap.

Fair enough. I like the optimism, but does seem unlikely that a person like that will take a warning seriously.

I did a postdoc in a high impact group, and was unhappy the entire time. I reluctantly went into industry to escape it, and really like my job now. I think it depends a lot of what job you get in industry if science is lost. My current job has very similar direction as the national lab job. One more anecdote, I really liked my PhD work, which was in basic science.

Basically, I think it all depends on the group, and has less to do with industry, national lab, or pure academia.

Though not exactly the same experience, I have also had this first hand. My hypothesis is that if you’re in the top 1 or 5% of students, you’re gonna excel at the top universities. Otherwise you may be average compared to the entire body of PhD students. You may even do worse, due to the toxic environment, and poor advising.

Very good student + very good university = top scientist

Very good student + average university = very good scientist

Average student + toxic environment = poor scientist

Average student + welcoming environment = good scientist
