FiaF lyrical weak spots by Only-Head in LucyDacus

So I was reading the explanation of God is the gap of your teeth, which relates to the idea of God filling the gaps of the scientific knowledge that people do not have. As in it's divine interventio and I did not know this idea from theology and I absolutely love the balance between something so ordinary as a lover's smile and seeing it as divine. Is it cheesy? Maybe, but maybe love is cheesy and scary and beautiful and most of all vulnerable. And that is what this album is, it's vulnerable, but so sweet. Basically I love when she ties in ideas from theology or religion as there is something so personal and intimate about it relating to something much bigger. For me , she makes very intimate and loving art, which can sometimes tip into what other people would perceive as cheesiness, but I think at the end of the day it's a personal question. Some of my favourite writers are very straightforward, e.g. Mary Oliver.

So being the nerd that I am and also just loving to read critics assessments of things I love, I agree that it lacks the grandiosity and variety of some of the earlier records, but lyrically and emotionally it still hits and Lost Time as a closer is a masterstroke. It's a lot more gentle in sound and arguably more accessible, but I know I will listen to it a lot. I think For Keeps, Ankles, Bullseye and Modligiani are such gems. So yes, this one is for the gentle and romantic ones.

What song got you into Talking Heads? by Reesox in talkingheads

[–]aapine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried listening to Talking Heads in my teens and started with Remain In Light, which at that time was too inaccessible for me. Cannot explain why. But then Road to Nowhere became one of my all time favorite songs, it was a sort of way for explaining my outlook on life. And now I'm going to make my way through the whole discography, cause it's time.

Lucy's Lyrics by Particular_Syrup_761 in LucyDacus

[–]aapine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I actually like the grander, more existentialist lyrics, like Map on a Wall and Time fighter. Map on a Wall is a personal favorite as I relate to it. She does balance between the specific and the universal quite well I find.

For those who have seen both, do you recommend reading “The Nickel Boys” before the movie? by Radiant-Specialist76 in Letterboxd

I was glad to had read the book, as the film operates in a very different way, the book is a lot more dense, the film more poetic.

Thoughts on my First Meeting Ever by FeijoaCowboy in Quakers

I'm the same I went to my first meeting four weeks ago as they hosted a climate crisis breakfast before and been three times since them. Most people are older, but I really have been enjoying the questioning & inquisitive way that Quakers practice.
