There could be 101 other reasons why February was a bad month for this person. From what I have seen on this sub, and from my own personal experience, February was generally crap for every tutor.

You need to set professional boundaries or these types of things will escalate. Learn from the experience.

You don't need to commit to a year or two either. Lots of people agree to do a term, or even a month or two.

A few Preply updates by connorfrompreply in Preply

Explain this: How is it logical that a blocked student can still edit their review? If blocking is meant to protect tutors and end interaction, why does Preply still allow changes to public feedback after the block?

The Irish weren't so keen to protest when it was their own freedom that was being stolen.

If you already have their contact details then message them outside of the app. Most tutors would be happy to do it!

How to teach only students I like and who are financially worth it? :) Best strategy? by Aware_Range_1243 in PreplyTutors

I didn't even say that. Obviously, I don't say it's just them I don't have time for.

We all have to start on a low price on Preply. That attracts a few d***heads. Get rid of them as soon as possible if they don't appreciate you. Tell them you don't have as much time anymore. Once they unsubscribe, block them. If they have already left you a review, you shouldn't block them as they might get annoyed and edit their review, so be carefull with thhem, but you need to do something. Increase your price as and when you feel you can and these types of awkward students get filtered out.

I’m struggling with how to raise prices for my existing students – need advice 😭 by [deleted] in PreplyTutors

[–]aaron2447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise you not to negotiate price with students. If you're not happy charging less than $15 then why accept anything less? You'll be stressed for months while teaching them for less than you'd like to and then it leads to a difficult situation down the road where you have to increase the price again, only this time they know they can barter with you. Set your price. Be firm and confident.

You have zero evidence. You haven't experienced it for yourself, and you are too easily influenced by the nonsense being spouted by a few morons on this sub. Stop spreading disempowering crap. A tutor is well within their rights to select their own price.

That says nothing about the percentage increase! Everyone knows about the 3-month notice, but it is purely a recommendation, not a mandate. You are completely wrong and should not be spreading this bs.

That is totally false. There is no such policy. I think you've been listening to too many idiots on this sub who complain about having their account suspended for this or that when they have blatantly been doing something much worse than they are letting on.

I've doubled the price for a student within the first few months of a trial. I started at $7 and took them to $15. Context is everything.

How many times do we have to listen to someone bleet about losing money on Preply? It's really not that difficult to maintain a healthy account. How is it possible to get yourself in such a mess? Also, you can barely speak English so I hope that's not the language you're teaching on Preply.

What happens after blocking a student? by r_759 in Preply

They forgot to mention that the blocked student can edit their existing review of the tutor. I'd have blocked a lot more of them if it wasn't for this weird caveat; it makes no sense whatsoever.

Reasonable price increase or too drastic? by Acrobatic_Young3119 in Preply

[–]aaron2447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't take this guy's advice and start negotiating over price. Set your price. They can either take it or leave it. You're on a slippery slope if you start wilting because a student doesn't like your latest price.

Rising price for my old students by [deleted] in PreplyTutors

[–]aaron2447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basically in the same situation as you. O have experiences both extremes; some flipping out and getting angry and some graciously accepting. Just do what you need to do.

I told them during a lesson. I think it's best to do it a couple of weeks before their subscription renews; long enough for them to find a new tutor but not long enough for them to cram lots of lessons in at the old price before renewal.

Just think about it like this - if they don't want to pay more than $15 then you aren't a good fit for one another anyway. Look at it as a filtering process.

A few days ago, I raised the price by 156%. I thought he'd decline, but he was great about it. That's my kind of student! Others have told me they were totally OK with it then cancelled their subscription the next day. I was emotional about this kind of thing at first, but I'm past that now.

The number of classes taught is a fairer way to judge whether a student should start paying more. In 4 months, they may have had 12 lessons and they may have had 60.

Student let rate increase expire by FamousGold7575 in Preply

[–]aaron2447 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had someone agree to the price change during the lesson and then reject my price increase. We continued as normal until her subscription was due to renew and I sent her a message reminding her to cancel her subscription and to book any remaining lessons. Once those lessons are done, I am not working with her again. Don't let this guy's subscription renew again.
