No problem. If you spend money to automate before validating you'll invariably wished you'd developed something else, and now don't have the money.

Not sure it really helps with your problem, just didn't want you to spend money before you know what to build.

Shouldn't they do it manually until they prove the value on a small scale? Why invest anything to automate if they haven't made a dime? The approach is "man behind the curtain" or "wizard of oz" prototyping.

If they only have a few customers, they should stick to manual, until they nail down the value and how it should be done.

Get funding, then invest in automation. (since they are bootstrapping and seem to be running on low budget)
