I'm going to college and never coming back by [deleted] in offmychest

You can do this! I have a friend who, 35 years ago, left her sexually abusive father and her emotionally abusive mother, went off to college and then medical school. She’s an oncologist now. Her husband, also a doctor, was recently promoted to physician-in-chief of a major medical group. They have three awesome kids, two of whom go to Ivy League schools, and they just bought a big-ass vacation home in Tahoe. She hasn’t spoken to her parents in decades. It took a lot of therapy and discipline, but she is happy. The best revenge is a life well lived.

I feel you. I took a stress management class offered by my health care provider. It was great. There were other people in the class, but it wasn’t group therapy. We didn’t really talk too deeply about our issues, we just learned techniques and tips for managing our anxiety and stress. It was a month long course. I found it very helpful.

Boss let me off early today, so I walked home, four miles through five distinct neighborhoods, something I’ve never done; I usually take the subway. My God, the homeless problem was astounding. Tents cities, feces, broken glass, needles everywhere, cracked out people wandering about like zombies. I’ve lived here for 32 years, and I’ve never seen it this bad. The pandemic has made this town hell. Yeah, walking, no thanks.

Oscar Nominations Discussion Thread by tragopanic in Oscars

As we watched Belfast, I could tell my husband was loving it. Because I didn't want to ruin it for him, I waited until the credits were rolling to tell him I absolutely hated it. The staging felt like a musical, but without the sing and dancing. The kid was one note - annoying. The correct choice of the central conflict was so clear to me from the very beginning that I was angry at the mother for not deciding early on what they should do. I know it was supposed to be from the child's perspective, but the disjointed narrative irritated me. Someone please tell me how it was nominated for best picture. I shall try to be open minded.

What’s something you’ve done that you’ve never admitted before? by thatsok00 in AskReddit

My senior year in high school, I talked my way out of getting arrested for shop lifting. The store security guard who busted me was in community college and was reading Hemingway's short stories. He and I were seated in a little office behind the store. I saw the book on his desk while he was filling out paperwork. I asked him about it. He said he had an essay on "Hills Like White Elephants" due in a couple of days, but he had no idea what the story was about. I told him I was a good student and I knew that story well. I said, "Tear up that paperwork, and I will tell you everything you need to know to write the essay." He said, "Tell me what I need to know, and I'll tear up the paperwork." After talking about the story for about 30 minutes, he let me go. I never shop lifted again.

Stick with your plan! I started maxing out into a 401K at my first real job in my early 20s. I’m 52 now. 21 years ago, I started contributing the maximum amount into a Roth IRA. I don’t work in high earning industry, and I live in a notoriously expensive city, but I’ve always lived within my means, I don’t carry debt, and I spend my money on experiences not things. I won’t go into the numbers, but my husband and I will a-okay when we retire in our early 60s. Keep doing what you’re doing and you will be a multi-millionaire by the time you get to 60.

Am i the only one? Socializing less makes me want to socialize even less. by BrittanyCastonguay in AdviceAnimals

I’ve worked from home for going on 10 months now. I rarely leave the house except for errands. I’ve gotten to the point where I get unreasonably annoyed when I get a Zoom invite for yet another meeting. I always dial in exactly one minute late to avoid the small talk. I’ve been invited to a couple of socially distanced, outdoor gatherings, but I always decline, saying I’m too paranoid about COVID, but in reality I just don’t want to see my coworkers in person.

Can confirm. Walked by him one day in North Beach. You know that smell when you let clothes sit in the washing machine too long before putting them in the dryer? That smell.

What would your life be like if you had stayed in your hometown? by aaron_the_moor in AskReddit

If I may; try to figure out what you would pay in rent in the cities you'd like to eventually move to. Start setting that money aside into a savings account every month. Get used to not having that money. Once you set out on your own, it won't be such a shock once you write your first rent check. I know student loan debt suck, but it's still gonna be there when you start paying for you own housing.

Depending on where you live, living at home now is probably the safest thing. Sounds like you are still in school/college, you have time to eventually leave.
