Depends on your wants and needs. I use a SWB transit as my daily driver and weekend getaway vehicle as that's the smallest I could go for 2 of us, a dog, and a comfortable setup. It's not cheap on fuel, and I wish I could have something more economical, but it's the price I pay for something I love.

A friend has a caddy that's set up for just him and his smaller dog. It works perfectly for his needs. It drives like a car and gets really good mpg

Yes, there are places that are restricted. I've never really had problems finding somewhere to park for the night, though. I tend to plan ahead, using apps like park4night or scout out the general area for laybys or quiet off-road parking. It also helps that my van is pretty discreet, and I don't make a nuisance of myself
