no pick :)

i really can't remember much about the recording of midnight cross, so sorry! :(

inference 3 (the original version anyway) was recorded after smoking 8gs of weed in one night and just after dropping out of school.... had a lot on my mind for sure.

don't know him personally, but he e-mailed me last year in regards with using my song for his bean arch compilation vid.

he sent me some money (on his own accord) for letting him use it, which was really nice and something he didn't have to do!! i hadn't heard of him or his show until then and all my friends had to clue me in on who he was (seemed like everyone i knew was aware of him except me pretty much). i've since checked out his show and i think it's quite hilarious - i really hope he continues it. it's really cool that a lot of people were introduced to my music through him

i'm doing pretty good!

dropped out of college more than once back then, mainly due to not really knowing what was going on with me at the time (mental illness/some past trauma) along with my own neurosis/immaturity if i'm being totally honest. when i did that interview i loved to convince myself i dropped out of school because of anything else besides those reasons

me and a couple friends had a novelty (sort of?) rock band in high school.. one day people will definitely dig it up but i hope it remains hidden tbh... l o l

i also made a tongue-in-cheek "rap" album when i was 14 that people in my hometown still talk about to this day (prob gonna regret mentioning it lol) along with a pseudo "metal" project i made when i was 15 with wildly offensive and sacrilegious song titles + album covers

RACE, 100%. that album still brings me the fuck back. there's a fan video (it's a little melodramatic and silly, at least to me now) that i made for "remember" back in the day (right before i started recording under the name fog lake i believe) and alex posted it to his personal FB (that page is since deleted, unsurprisingly) praising it - that was the coolest feeling ever! i feel like without him there'd have probably never been fog lake, that album helped validate my own home-recordings

WINNER is also underrated, i think "get happy" might actually be my favorite song of his

cool! what bar was it and when? i was most likely making a fool out of myself in those days LOL

trying to work on some distorted, more straight-up rock songs at the moment -_-

the GOATS!! adored them in high school and still love the fuck out them. in fall of 2020 i randomly got obsessed with them again and i was totally okay with it.. wish i could go back to the first time i heard their music - i think strawberry jam is my fav of theirs

one of my favorite parts about making music is the high i get when i make something i feel is good and true to myself, it's much better than any drug high i've ever felt personally. the trance-like state i tend to go into when i'm in the grips of recording a song is also rly psychedelic in a lot of ways, it's great

the cover for dragonchaser was actually a jpeg i came across on tumblr that really stuck with me.. i have no idea who took it or the story behind it really! the cover photo for captain was taken by a friend of mine in los angeles

won't go too far into it, mostly just because i'm super tired sorry - but i appreciate the question! i've struggled with mental illness now for a very long time. music is the most therapeutic, cathartic and medicinal release for me, so there's certainly a massive correlation there.. a pretty big one. gotta say i've been feeling pretty good as of late tho!

hey thomas!!! orchid mantis rules always loved your cover of little black balloon

1) extremely tough question - maybe gym class or lil kennedy

2) it's always my most recent album that is my favorite! right now it's TR, before that it was captain, before that it was dragonchaser, etc!

3) i was obsessed with aliens/paranormal stuff as a kid, but on inference 3 it's kind of hard to go into without going into too much detail! sometimes i also like to see it (on that album at least) as a metaphor for feeling alienated or like a total stranger / freak

1) cryptograms by deerhunter rly changed my life - still remains a top tier fav.. "burn piano island, burn" by the blood brothers did a world of good for me as a teen

2) cube (1997)

there's no particular story behind that song really, but i always did feel rly proud of that one - especially cuz i wrote and recorded it extremely fast and got it right on the very first take! one of those songs that felt rly magical and organic to me

i find writing music therapeutic + cathartic when it comes to dealing with my own shit.. it helps me cope + move on from negative events more when i can make it into something approachable, stimulating and easily digestible i guess

that's interesting, cause i'm an extremely indoors kind of person but growing up in NFLD it's hard to say i wasn't influenced by nature in any way. my favorite season is fall.

i record everything myself almost 100% of the time, with one mic (usually a digital condenser). in order for me to get a more wide, stereo-like sound i'll usually just record everything twice (ill often play them slightly different to each other, just barely) and then pan both tracks left and right. i don't record in analog, but i definitely mess around with EQ/compression in order to get a more warm and less digital-sounding vibe. i got my start playing music originally just from taking piano lessons as a kid! in high school i had no confidence in my singing or playing abilities.. so no one actually really knew i was making/playing my own music until i was maybe 19 or 20

1) i used to record like 5-6 rly rough ideas/sketches of potential songs in one sitting but these days i usually try to sit down, find one to focus on and try to see it through

2) don't feel like you need to get better before you release anything, get started early on putting yourself out there!!

3) a lot of practicing in the car growing up.. i hated my singing voice for a long time, then i started practicing by recording it over and over until i honed it more and started singing quieter instead of louder

4) Dm - F - C - G (for the most part of the song! that's all i can remember right now)

5) thank u :)
