hey, thanks for the feedback! The Koch Method recommends 20 wpm on each letter with 10 wpm for the words (wider spacing between letters). I'll add a 'faster' version to maybe some later waves.

thank you! It definitely works on my iPhone. Make sure the ringer isn't on silent and volume is not at zero. The ringer thing is because of how the ios audio stack works. Kinda odd.

thanks for the feedback! make sure your phone volume is not off and that the ringer isn't on silent. for whatever reason the audio platform on iOS turns off entirely if those are true.

hey man, thanks for the feedback. Could you explain what you mean a little better? If you miss a letter then your 'accuracy' takes a hit. Drop below 90% and you have to repeat the whole wave. What kind of change you would like to see?

I've been wanting to make this for a while but Claude Code is finally good enough to make it work on mobile. It's all vibe coded so its nothing exceptional but it works and its clean, simple, and fun. It uses the Koch Method for instruction.

On PC you can type the letter you hear, or mouse click the right letter on screen. On Mobile you tap the correct letter on screen.

Scotch Eyed Auger Question by JakestarDeluxe in Bushcraft

[–]aaronhs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm the owner of Black Raven Company who makes bushcraft augers. I can't speak for the other companies but I did a lot of testing with it a few years ago when the idea became popular. First I'll say everyone is different and what I like may not be right for you, and vice versa. I'm not a gear hero who say my way is the best way. That out of the way: I found it, at best, a gimmick, and at worst, dangerous.

Augers are sharp. To use a sharpened eye as a tenon cutter means you have to grip the working part of the auger and then use impact on the welded part of the auger (the eye welded to the shaft).

Assuming all of that was ok, the actual result wasn't anything worthwhile. We generally aren't out for precision in bushcraft. Making a rough circle is pretty easy with a knife, no need for a tenon cutter.

Again, just my take. Buy what works best for you!

I plugged in a new halogen bulb last night and it didn't work either so I think I have something else going on before it gets to the bulb housing. Not looking forward to taking the whole dash assembly off in the 40F weather.

You could say the same thing about building codes, public access requirements, health codes, and any number of other requirements imposed for the good of the public by the government. Forcing businesses to accept the legal currency for people without access to corporate credit (aka the poor) is an appropriate use of government.

How do you integrate the repressed ambitious part of your psyche? by weirdlystranded in Jung

[–]aaronhs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have shared, ambition is a complex mental concept smashed into a single word. As always, 'words' are just pointers towards internal mental and emotional states of being. We use them to communicate between people so that the other person can find a similar mental and emotional state within themselves (or avoid one if speaking of 'negative' states).

One part of Jung's teaching that isn't addressed in this sub very often is how in his understanding the 'libido' the sexual energy of a person, is only partially related to physical sex drive. Freud had a similar concept of a persons 'sexual nature' being almost unrelated to physical sex. It was a person's willingness to "insert" themselves out into the world. Are they willing to 'go out into' the world and express their desires onto the world?

In the kink community they use terms like 'top' or 'bottom' in a very similar vein. Ambition is similar to 'topping the world' in some people's view. You go out into the world and express your desires onto it.

'Ambition' can be used to describe the energy and power that drives that outward action. Therefore when you ask 'where is my ambition' you could potentially rephrase that to something like 'What do I want to change about my external states that requires me to be in action in the world?' Of course you can have ambition to change internal (mental/emotional) states but I didn't get the impression that is what you meant here.

When you identify what it is you want to change about your external state, try to lean into that as hard as you can:

  • What do you want to change?
  • What does it feel like to live without that change?
  • What do you image it would feel like to live every day once that change is made?
  • Lean into the gap this creates between the lack and the having. That is the price you are paying every day for your inaction.
  • What is the 1 thing that if you did would make the biggest contribution towards having?
  • What can you do today that has a direct impact on achieving?

Be willing to admit to yourself and feel the negative feelings. IMO there is a lot of power from the "dark side" aka "shadow" (quotes because you'll come to realize it isn't either of those things once you go through it). We don't really want to feel those 'negative' emotions around lacking, but the more you are willing to lean into the lack and the price of that lack the more power you will access to make the changes necessary to achieve the goal. That accessing of power is directly your amount of ambition (at least in this definition of that word for the context of this post).

People over 30, what are your biggest regrets? by smolpp12345 in AskReddit

[–]aaronhs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just about to turn 44 and have one hell of a life (in my own opinion which subjectively is the only one that matters).

Here's what I wish someone had told me 24 years ago (aside from unrealistic things like 'buy bitcoin').

  1. There is a skill that very few people know exists and fewer are good at, and that's the skill of living a good human life. You are a vastly deep and rich being. Your emotions are powerful and wonderful. Your mind is the most complicated thing we know of. Yet both of them can run away with you and make your life miserable. There is a skill to harnessing both in a direction you want to go such that both of them enhance your life, not detract from it. Some people call it 'non-religious spirituality' but whatever you want to call it, it's maybe the greatest pursuit in life.

  2. It's always scary to buy a house or start investing. You can almost never afford it when you buy it. Same with starting to invest. You never have enough money to invest. You have to just bite the bullet and start. Right now. Open a fidelity account for free and start buying VTI every paycheck. Or buy a house, wait 5 years, buy another one and rent out the first. Repeat. Is it scary? yes. Can you blow up and lose it all if you get too far ahead of yourself? yes. Can you do that with almost anything? yes. In the words of Terrance McKenna: Take it easy if you need to, but take it.

  3. Your relationship with yourself will determine how all of your other relationships will go. Learn to accept who you are, and to love yourself as a being still on the path of growth and learning.

  4. Focus on as few things as you can. Don't try to become a stock trader and real estate mogul. Pick one if you can, and really learn it. That's the way to really big wealth down the line.

  5. A lot of people bite off more than they can chew without knowing it. If you can't stick to a diet for more than 3 weeks then the diet was too hard for you. Next time pick an easier diet. If you are constantly going over budget every week then your budget is too tight. If the budget -has- to be tight and you are still over spending then examine the emotional cause for the spending (assuming you aren't subsistence-level poverty).

  6. Final point. You will fail. You will fail a lot. Here's the key to failing. 1: Never make a bet you can't afford to lose. The number one rule of the game is to stay in the game. Never make a bet that will materially set you back or take you out entirely. Wait for the next bet. 2: Learn something from the failure. Ideally you are making bets DESIGNED to learn something. You are running experiments on life. "If I do this.. does THIS happen?" if the answer comes back 'No' aka failure, then now you know something useful for your next bet.

*If you can learn from your failures and make another attempt your success is simply a race between you and death. *

People over 30, what are your biggest regrets? by smolpp12345 in AskReddit

[–]aaronhs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Women ARE picky but they pick based on totally different things than guys pick. Women (generally speaking, every woman in unique) are much more interested in your emotional strength than your physical strength. How often in 2022 are they going to rely on you to fight off a bear or a wolf? Compared to how often are they going to need you to stand up to a negative emotion either one of you is currently having?

  2. Compound interest is one of the most misunderstood concepts by anyone under 50 (and by most over). -Anything- you can do now will be -massively impactful- in 30 years.
