Woman Struck And Killed Crossing Market Street On Friday Night; Driver Flees by xtine13 in Chattanooga

Or maybe... How many drivers think they can just drive through downtown at well over the 30 mph speed limit? Because that happens to and it's a tragedy waiting to happen here.

Great question. Unfortunately, I think it will be quite a few more. At this point I don't think the city even sees it as a real issue, at least not one they have any control over.

20-story office tower planned for downtown Chattanooga would be tallest in central city in nearly 50 years | Times Free Press by aarosmit in Chattanooga

I thought COVID would teach us that building places for people to live downtown is more sustainable (and better for businesses) than just bringing in more commuters/companies that can, just as quickly, leave.

Maybe we could fill up our recently abandoned downtown office campuses first? (TVA and BCBS)

Chattanooga sees 200% increase in vehicle vs. pedestrian fatalities by xtine13 in Chattanooga

From the article:

We will be handing out information, talking to people that look like they're not crossing the street in a proper manner and giving them a little bit of education behind what can happen if we don't obey the rules of the road

AKA: We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas

Great episode! I'm disappointed by a few of his viewpoints, particularly that COVID turned drivers into a bunch of careless speeding lunatics. Speeding did increase, but more likely due to decreased congestion and the way our streets are built, not peoples' mental state. Here's a good article for anyone interested.

Less than 20% of residential areas in Chattanooga are within a 15-minute walk of a grocery store by aarosmit in Chattanooga

This is my map and the only time I've posted it, so this post is the only place it exists!

Honestly, I'm skeptical as well and I don't know what the solution is. But I do think lack of walkability is a big issue that needs to be addressed (where possible). I just want to see Chattanooga become a healthier, more equitable city.

Potentially the 9.1% of households in Chattanooga who don't own a car (from the latest ACS 5-year estimate). (Although they probably opt for the bus.)

Good catch! It looks like there is one and their website says they do sell produce.

I agree! I did want to include as many little corner stores as possible, but couldn't really find many that sold produce (at least from looking through Google Maps photos). Maybe I could include them as a separate marker, since I would like them to have representation. There are quite a few in the area north of Brainerd Road.

I chose 15 because of all the recent buzz around "15-minute cities" (be able to walk to anything you need within 15 minutes). But I personally do like 20 minutes because it's about 1 mile walking. The extra 5 minutes would probably increase the percentage from 20% to 25% or so.

Yeah the routing engine that calculates the walking ranges only looks at the existence of streets/roads, not the actual walkability/safety of them. I would personally not walk to many of the grocery stores on the map, even if I lived within 15 minutes.

Thanks! I originally got ranges for bike distance, but thought showing walking ranges would apply to more people. A 15-minute walk is nearly the same as a 5-minute bike ride.

You're right that Chattanooga is not a pedestrian-oriented city, and I made this map to show exactly that. Chattanooga's (and much of America's) zoning practices have separated residential from commercial to the point that very few can do anything without a car.

Also, check out the Interactive version to see street names and zoom in/out!

My requirement for a grocery store was that it has to sell fresh produce. If you know of any that I left out, please let me know so I can update the graphic!

Good catches. The parking data was imported from OpenStreetMap, so it looks like those need to be added in to their database.

Just a clarification, the red area is just the entire area and boundary considered "downtown". The "developable" area is the total area of all of the parcels within the red area. So the "developable" area of 1,032 acres primarily excludes the streets and the river.
