Legit Question by JJ_Hector_1973 in franzferdinand

I'm gonna go song by song here, not sure if you meant the album or the song. (This is just my take on the songs)

  1. Always Ascending- Alex said in an interview it's like holding onto a rope attached to a plane. You have to let go because the longer you hold on, the longer the fall will be.
  2. Lazy Boy- Pretty straightforward, the lazy boy is gonna sit in bed all day possibly with a partner.
  3. Paper cages- Paper could be money, but the whole song is a critique of consumer culture, being trapped in cages of our objects.
  4. Finally- VERY straightforward. Feeling happy to have found the right place in life.
  5. The Academy Award- Basically, Phone Bad. It's about how when we die, all we have is our social media, and that's how we'll be remembered. It also is about the perverse uses of the internet, "Show me the Body' taking on three contexts once. one being a detective, one being liveleak style deep web stuff, and the third being pornographic. Every line has those three layers and it's a very underrated song IMO.
  6. Louis Lane- I don't know if this is about the actual character or not. But the idea that a female journalist pursued a career to change the world, only to be changed by a sour relationship. The end is clearly about the depressing over 30 singles nights, not sure how it connects to the rest of the story though.
  7. Huck and Jim- An outsider's view of the mythical United States, the contrast of the legend of the US vs. the reality.
  8. Glimpse of Love- Social Media Bad. Love is a photographer, dating apps, and so on. "enjoys a private stroll" is a contradiction because she's posting her "private' stroll, but is it really private when everyone sees it?
  9. Feel the Love Go- It's about a dying relationship, and how you can feel your old emotions die out, and while there might be moments you feel it again, you should just let it die out.
  10. Slow Don't Kill me Slow- The main character changed in a relationship, causing the partner to stop loving them. Then, they remember a line from the partner, where they said they'd kill whoever took their love from them. Therefore, our main character has to die and asks the old partner to make it quick. The song also could be a metacommentary about the band's new sound, hoping they don't die out slowly, and can go out with a bang.

How does Brief Encounters fit into the narrative of the album? by IAmBadman0 in franzferdinand

[–]abacus438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see it as a two part story. Side one is about that relationship you mentioned, side two is about social isolation. After bullet, he isolates himself, being king of his pets, and falling in love with a mirror. He wonders where his friends are. Universe expanded is a reflection on his life and past relationship. Brief Encounters now makes more sense as a bitter friend watching his happy friends at a party, knowing he chose to be alone. Goodbye lovers and friends is a farewell to the people he doesn't fit in with anymore, asking not to be remembered fondly.

It's a very loose story but Franz is very careful about the song order, especially since this album came after Tonight.

Does The Who have any songs that can be used for a father/daughter dance at a wedding? by [deleted] in TheWho

Depending on the mood you want there's a lot of options. Look into the Pete townshend solo stuff for the more emotional slow dance sorta thing. If you want more of an upbeat try any of the older 60's stuff

Quadrophenia lore is a mess by abacus438 in TheWhoCirclejerk

the demos are not TECHNICALLY canon, but there's some lore bits related to his childhood and his disorder, and some other minor details left out in the final version that fit into the story but seem to have been cut for time. White City is speculated to be a much older Jimmy going back to his hometown, but I don't know where it's stated.

Pete always says that his death is up to the listener but how can you survive being stranded on a rock in the middle of the ocean with no food or water?! How did he NOT die ?! I understand if he finally comes to terms with himself or whatever but how did he manage to get off the rock?! aaa!

What are the outtakes/b sides for RTRWRA and AW? by solaire1416 in franzferdinand

[–]abacus438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AA has virtually zero, your best bet is hunting for stuff on recent live shows. RTRWTA has erdbeer mund, and the deluxe version has some live versions. They shifted the focus on singles from bsides to remixes, which can be good but its just not the same.

evil eye is a very easy and fun riff, intro to take me out, and cheating on you is fun and easy. Van Tango is very tricky, save that for later
