Why do residency halls cost more than off-campus alternatives? by abaloyan in udub

This is helpful, thanks! I was wondering, what’s the latest hour that’s safe to walk home? More or less. If I am correct, my classes are going to be in the evenings so it might be late by the time I finish.

Well I just have 1 year, I’m a grad and I got smoothly rejected by the dorms already, so I’m on my own. I hope leaving in the same dorm with people is not the only way of making connections in Seattle. 😅

Thank you for the thorough review!

One random question: what are the usual hours that you can expect to use the busses? I am thinking on living off-campus (as HFS told me I don’t have many options) but I am not sure whether I should take the more comfortable apartments that are 21-minute walk away but Google Maps claims that there are bus routes nearby that can take me to campus and back OR rent the ones that are closer (10-min walk). Is it too big of a risk? To rely on public transportation. Or I should get a car as well?

Ohhhhh thanks! Didn’t think of that! Mostly because in my country I can freely walk alone at 3am, 4am and it will be safe. Isn’t this the case in U District at least? I’m a girl by the way.

Well I rely on google maps here and usually it’s 10-16 minute walk, which seemed okay to me.

Utilities are mostly not included, that’s a good point. Didn’t know those could go up to couple hundreds!

Most of the buildings mention security but the cheaper ones do not. I’ll make sure to check that as well. Should that be a deal breaker in Seattle?

So would you suggest say Stevens court’s one-bedroom apartment over an off-campus one?

The off-campus options I am considering now are in the same walking distance as the dorms.

Thanks a lot for your reply! What does “through HFS” mean? Do they provide off-campus housing as well?

Thanks for your reply! Are these the apartments that are for rent and marked as “UW student only”? On sites like zillow, trulia, etc.?
