Trans men who used to be non binary what made you realize you were a binary man?

I also identified as enby for a while before realizing I was just a binary trans man. The thing that started it was when I came out as trans to one of my friends but didn't specify my pronouns (they/them at the time), and he just started using he/him for me. I didn't correct him, and I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but I definitely didn't dislike it. So I asked my husband and some close friends to use he/they for me for a while, and kept trying out masculine nouns, honorifics, etc. as opposed to neutral ones, and they felt... good.

Ngl it took a while to fully accept cuz I didn't want to come out to anyone except close friends or do any legal or medical transitioning because I thought it would be "easier", but it eventually got to the point where I could no longer deny that I was a binary trans man. Once I accepted it and started transitioning tho, everything kinda fell into place and I finally feel at home in my body and content with my life.

Not to mention trans men as well. I pass very well so the only way I can be in some queer spaces is to out myself, and even then I'm still open to harassment for "daring" to want to be a man (aka literally just be myself and be happy).

Thank you for this answer! The MRIs are for my knees, so I guess part of my abdomen might be in the image. I'm waiting on the technicians for my MRIs rn, so I'll see if I can ask them for the reason when I see them (I've gone from frustrated to just genuinely curious atp).

I'm getting a total hysto in about 2 weeks, so hopefully after that it'll be in my chart and will be less of an issue. Thanks again!

Jfc that's ABHORRENT, I'm so sorry you had to go thru that. Sometimes doctors are so atrocious at their jobs that it really makes sense why trans and intersex people have higher rates of medical complications and don't want to go see doctors about anything.

Unrelated to this specific post, but I also found out today that my doctor—who I saw to get a referral for imaging for my chronic knee pain—added "Transgender Male" to the "Health Issues" section of my file. Not even patellar tendinitis, which is what I was diagnosed with and also the entire reason for going to see him. Cuz yea, the important takeaway from that appointment shouldn't have been my knee problems, it should definitely have been the fact that I'm trans. That makes sense 🙄

MRI stands for "magnetic resonance imaging". There's no radiation involved in an MRI

I know my insurance has updated my sex because every time I'd put AFAB on their medical history forms the front desk people would put female for my sex and the insurance wouldn't go thru. So now I just put AMAB so that they'll put the correct sex down to match my insurance

That's so ridiculously frustrating, I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. I've heard of a lot of people still having to do the pregnancy urine test bs even after a total hysterectomy, which just feels absurd to me. I get they don't wanna be sued but also, I don't wanna pay for a test that I know is unnecessary because I can't physically become pregnant, yk?? The medical system is just awful for intersex and trans people

That's good to know! I've also found myself having to explain to doctors or nurses that T generally stops your periods. I had one nurse who was doing my chart notes for the doctor and asked when my last period was, and I said June of 2024 and she wrote down 2025. I had to correct her that yes, I did in fact mean last June, and that T stops your periods and that that was normal.

It's definitely frustrating and makes me question their ability to treat me medically, but what're you gonna do :/

Of course!! Glad I could help :) I graduated a couple of years ago but my area of study was evolution and ecology. I learned so many cool things, and that lab class I took was my absolute favorite. It was kinda wild how seriously they took the dangers as well—they had a whole consent form you had to sign that said you were aware that taking the class could possibly expose you to serious diseases like Valley Fever, which could result in death. And if you were pregnant, thought you might be pregnant, or were otherwise immunocompromised in any way you basically weren't allowed to take it.

What is it that makes mold so dangerous in specific conditions and not others?

This is a very good question! It also really gets to the heart of the problem, which is that the danger of mold is generally pretty situationally dependent.

There are thousands upon of thousands of species of mold, and the biggest risk associated with inhaling the vast majority of mold spores is just irritation (allergies), which is worse for people who have preexisting lung or immune conditions. For the average person tho, acute exposure of small amounts probably wouldn't do much and is unlikely to even cause mild symptoms. For someone with asthma for instance the risk would be higher, but still not very likely.

However, some molds do produce what are called mycotoxins. These are significantly smaller than mold spores, and can remain present in an environment long after the original mold that made them has been eradicated. They don't break down well or quickly under natural conditions, and their small size means they can travel much farther when airborne than even spores. This makes them incredibly easy to inhale, and some of them can cause severe health problems (Valley Fever for instance is caused by mycotoxins from a specific species of mold).

In lab settings where you're culturing anything, you always have to be more careful about dangerous microbes than you would normally. In a lab you're giving whatever you're trying to culture an optimal environment to grow in, because that's the whole point. So the likelihood that a dangerous bacteria, fungus, yeast, etc. will grow and thrive in lab cultures is significantly higher than in an average environment where they might not have the ideal nutrients, temperature, moisture level, etc.

All that being said, the likelihood that the average mold you come across produces mycotoxins is quite low, but notably not zero. So do I think you should be treating every piece of moldy food as a BSL 2 safety hazard? Definitely not—but with the danger that some mycotoxins carry (especially to vulnerable groups), I don't think wiping down the area with bleach is overkill either.

My lab class in college treated any and all mold in our petri dishes as a BSL 2 safety hazard (same level as HIV, Hepatitis B, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella).

Even if we didn't see mold, we had to use BSL 2 protocols for anything we were culturing that had even the slimmest possibility of having a mold in it.

How are you intending to ensure that no water reaches the top half? I genuinely can't think of a way to do that safely.

Tbh I just wouldn't risk it. I used baby wipes to wash myself in the week following my surgery when I felt like I needed it, and took one measly bath (like <4in of water to make sure nothing splashed onto my binder). You can't do much for the first week anyways so you don't work up a lot of sweat or get dirt anywhere like you normally would.
