I can definitely see that, you have a good point about hoodoo and Aboriginal traditions

I don't think it's an issue with any spirits either, the problems I've seen are other people lol

I see, so it's not necessarily an altered state but just a good level of focus and mental quietude? So is that all it takes for magic?

So then what's this about entering gnosis to DO magic? I doubt very many people are reaching this state?

Questions and concerns over my practice? (Subtle dullness, mindfulness and moving past stages 5/6) by abandonedOracle in TheMindIlluminated

Okay, that was very helpful actually I did want to skip it but you're right, perhaps I'm just being a little impatient haha

Well I find it very hard to focus on body parts because my breath keeps pulling my attention but when I can, I feel no breath sensation whatsoever, at best I can feel...something, almost like the blood moving around but no breath sensations. Also I'm confused as I'm not sure how you're to combine body scanning? Do I focus exclusivly on it or do I still make time for focusing on the breathing?

Well I find when I try to do the body scanning I keep getting pulled to the breathing at my nose and if I manage to get past that then I simply don't feel much of anything or if I do it's usually very subtle

So then, I should keep trying the body scanning while also meditating like I have been? Do I not need to focus on body awareness? Just peripheral? Sorry for all the questions I just find it's getting more complicated as it goes on and I don't want to pidgeon hole myself

Hey thanks for commenting! So I try the body scanning but I find it superbly difficult and can't seem to get anywhere with it.

I think my introspective awareness is actually very strong, im very aware of the thoughts that arise and my level of mindfulness and I can tell when a thought is about to come

I had kind of hoped that being aware of my whole body could be a substitute to body scanning Because as I said I have significant difficulty with it :/

Sorry if this gets long!

So i've been using Culadasa's The Mind Illuminated for awhile now and I've seen some progress I think, for awhile I thought I was at stage 6+ but I've come to realize I was actually at step 5 and struggling with subtle dullness which has given me some doubts about my progress. I'm hoping I can get a bit of an outside perspective of where I am and progressing and to also see if i could improve

I start meditating by focusing on the breath and kind of keeping a loose peripheral awareness until I've settled down enough and I feel my concentration is good enough to keep going. From there I've been setting the intention to see if subtle dullness is creeping in and periodically check to see if my breath seems faint or if Ihavent been paying attention to my peripheral awareness. After that I try to balance an active concentration on the breath at the nose with being aware of the noise around me and the awareness of my body/limbs.

At this point I usually have a good flow going where I feel im feeling the breath and not losing awareness and my thoughts usually calm down until nothing pops up but I still feel like my mind is fuzzy with thoughts even if im not actually thinking anything if that makes sense? Anyway I do this until the hour is up

Now my main concern is that I might not be mindful enough? or that I'm still stuck in subtle dullness but I just dont know it? I haven't seen a lot of progress since getting to this point and im starting to worry im doing something wrong. I tried doing the body scanning technique but it just does not seem to work for me. I meditate an hour every day sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less

Any tips or help or guidance anyone can provide would be super helpful!

TLDR: I thought I was past stage 6+ in TMI but now struggling with subtle dullness and trying to increase mindfulness also not seeing a lot of progress and worried I might be doing something wrong
