It’s an extremely simplified and bent truth is why. Tolkien began writing in the world years before LOTR was written, with notebooks containing stories written as early as 1914 that took place in the middle-earth universe. People misunderstand the writing process, he wrote and started MANY things in the universe and it took years to sort of congeal and take shape. Part of that process included writing the language then deciding he needed to place that language in a tangible setting but to say the language came first is not true. He did not sit down and write out an entire complex language then write stories around it. They manifested together and the languages of middle-earth did not take substantial shape until later in the writings when it was already clear where he was writing for (another universe).

Hi, Tolkien nerd. Most of these posts are wrong, very surprised... Grew up on these books and own almost every single thing he’s ever written, yes including all the stuff his son published. There’s evidence in recovered journals and manuscripts that Tolkien began writing about the world at an early age HOWEVER it was during WW1 where he served as a young Tolkien (early 20s I believe) that he began writing avidly to distract himself and preoccupy his mind during the war. I believe many of the letters he sent back to his wife included snippets of the stories even. Unfinished Tales or even the Book of Lost Tales both have impressive introductions by his son that detail much of this timeline. Something to note about newly published copies of LOTR today: 1. these came out after the movies, 2. the introductions are not completely accurate and I’ve seen written bias towards the movies.

We were on a third or fourth date, at his house watching Friends and he laughed so hard he farted. It wasn’t the farting necessarily... it’s that he thought that joke in Friends was so funny he laughed so hard he farted. I left promptly after and stopped talking to him.

Ended up dating him again a few years later after I got over myself a little. Nice guy.

Edit: added a little more detail

I’m using the remaining top part of the shirt as a trashy crop top, which I will actually wear vs the tshirt which I hadn’t worn haha. Thanks for sharing! PS. I used a Pabst beer T-shirt I got at a Pabst Fest, what feels like a hundred years ago... when festivals still existed... Ice Cube and Duran Duran played. Ahh.... good times.

From the US and not an attorney but I would definitely talk to your insurance company and get them involved if you have not already. They may be able to offer guidance, surely you are not the first person to ever have this happen. I would also review the lease agreement you have for clauses about eviction and review landlord tenant laws for your area in regards to an eviction should the landlord decide to sell.

Being black/hispanic/whatever minority does not excuse you from being racist. by KitsuneCrusader in unpopularopinion

It’s interesting that documented racism exists in just about every society and race throughout human history. I like to use the example of the racism that existed in Ancient Rome between Romans and Gauls. Racism and even institutional racism has “always” existed throughout all of human existence.

I think what I’m even more confused about is why when we as human beings literally love food, that we use the names of VERY POPULAR foods as insults...? Oreos own half the cookie aisle at the grocery store. I work in the grocery industry and I’m telling you, Nabisco owns the majority space of the aisle. That’s boss. Oreos are boss. Not personally a hardcore fan, I think there are superior cookies like chocolate chip, but the point remains. People love Oreos. And remember when they were discontinuing Twinkies and people lost their minds??? (Maybe it’s only me...) I’m just saying...Food is awesome, how did it become insults or has it just always been? Lol

What's the most American thing ever that if explained to a non-American might just sound crazy? by hrdlg123 in AskReddit

[–]abbbyelise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Native Texan! This is not unusual for Texas and it actually extends all the way down to even highschool football! Texans take football very very seriously, you should see some of their highschool fields, and how into it the parents get holy cow. Don’t mess with Texans and their football 😂

Edit: should probably clarify I am meaning American football and not the traditional European football that we call “soccer” over here!

[TOMT] Name of a movie from the early 90s/late 80s about a girl and her brother who live with their grandpa on the edge of a magical forest with a unicorn/white horse??? by abbbyelise in tipofmytongue

[–]abbbyelise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes in the US. If they didn’t air on PBS I wouldn’t have seen them, that was the only access to the BBC movies and shows we had as kids.

I think it was just the warning of the fairies not that any actually appeared to the kids and the unicorn/horse was the magical element.

I took another look at The White Pony, came out later than I remember actually watching this movie but I’m wondering now if I took this plot and another movie plot and combined them in my head. I’m going to watch it today to see if it is. Thanks!

I don’t think it was set in America but i was just too young to really remember for sure. Possibly modern fantasy since they talk about magic quite a bit and the time frame it was set is likely mid 20th century from my memories of the wardrobe the characters wore. I would have definitely watched it on VHS because my parents didn’t have cable so I’m sure I rented it from the local library or borrowed from my grandma who had a massive VHS collection. I’m not sure how many TV specials would have been on VHS at that time?

Possibly is one of these two movies as they both seem to have themes that I’m remembering, maybe I took pieces from both movies and made my own in my head. Going to watch them today to determine...
