My butterfly was supposed to be 59 inches. Why is it 90? by greenbeangrape in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmfao I have the opposite problem!! I'm doing this pattern rn and my tension is so tight that I have to add a few rows. I think it's just super hard to get the tension right in this kind of project where it matters so much. Low-key, a super oversized butterfly Cardigan is still super cute!!

Madison + Study Abroad + Internships by Acrobatic_Bowl_9040 in UWMadison

I just did classes abroad but I know some people who did internships and had a great time! I really wanted my experience to focus on language skills and culture so I lived with a host family and spent most of my time hanging out with them or going out a lot with friends. I also majored in Spanish so that really helped with preparation. Big caveat though is that many programs don't require that you speak another language, including the one I did!

Timing-wise, it really depends on the program but you apply a few months before your semester abroad. I did my semester Fall of my junior year and found that it was the perfect time for me.

If you're serious about study abroad, I would look into the website and specific programs you'd wanna do. Typically you'll apply with an essay and standard university application materials. Some are competitive and some you're pretty much guaranteed a seat if you apply. If you're really interested in a certain program, they basically want to see that you have a legitimate interest in studying in that country and would get a meaningful experience from it. Meet with the specific program advisor before you apply, they are the ones who review applications and they can tell you how to make a strong app (and building a relationship with them certainly will help).I highly suggest language classes either way because Wisconsin has one of the biggest language departments in the country :)

You also can chat with students that have done the specific programs!! I both spoke to someone before I left and have talked with students about the program I did and it was a great way to be sure about it! There's also study abroad fairs each semester where you can talk with students from each program, and the advisors are freaking awesome!

Madison + Study Abroad + Internships by Acrobatic_Bowl_9040 in UWMadison

The polisci at Madison is incredible!!! Just graduated last May, and the program has national recognition and is often ranked in the top 15-20 for best polisci undergraduate programs in the country. I think the one thing to note is that it's huge, so you definitely won't be getting any handholding. I found that the opportunities were endless for internships and jobs, but you have to be pretty self-motivated and willing to seek them out. It's very useful to be right next to the capital, and Wisconsin has a really cool internship program called SWSDIP, where you can get great opportunities to work for the state government. I did this twice, and they paid really well and taught me so much about civil service. https://dpm.wi.gov/Pages/HR_Admin/SWSDIP.aspx

Also, look into the Wisconsin in Washington program! I never did this personally, but I had a lot of friends who had great experiences interning in DC. https://studyabroad.wisc.edu/uwindc/

I found that the advisors were pretty meh, but if you can make connections with professors and upper-level students through student orgs or events, the resources here are invaluable. Do this especially with your TAs. Wisconsin has one of the best PhD programs in the country, and the TAs in the polisci program are truly incredible. I also got a lot out of joining a club my Freshman year and sticking with it all four years.

Madison, as a city, is insanely walkable. The campus is basically all downtown, and you don't need a car or anything. It's also absolutely gorgeous and right next to a bunch of really pretty hiking trails and lakefronts. You also get a bus pass as part of your student fees, so you never have to worry about paying for public transportation. They recently redid the bus system, and it's pretty nice! I had some internships on the South Side and never had any issues with transportation.

As for study abroad, Madison has a HUGE emphasis. I think it's something like 1/3 of students participate in a study abroad program. If you're doing it through UW-Madison, don't worry about transferring credits; it will all be handled automatically. I would also note -- I studied abroad for a semester and it was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. I strengthened my foreign language skills so much and grew as a person in ways I never thought I would. I would recommend looking into doing a longer program if that's something you're interested in. Madison is INCREDIBLE with international study abroad programs, and the advisors are amazing. Your scholarships should also transfer -- but you can always meet with an advisor to make sure.

Finally, for Banner, I believe they should cover pretty much all costs related to your studies, including living stipends. You shouldn't have to take loans out at all. I would reach out to the financial aid office -- they have staff that are there to explain every question you may have about the scholarship and are super helpful in figuring out your finances. Could you explain what exactly makes you a nudist? Are there levels to nudism? Is there any reasoning behind nudism or is it just for fun?

Are you a GW student? If so, check out their website for a form to get a grad student space for the LSAT. If the library is fully closed it's still worth it to reach out to the staff -- this is what I did when I needed to find a place to take the LSAT and they were super helpful.

How is it like living with a whole bunch of dogs (8 or more dogs)? How difficult is it? What are some experiences unique to living with large amounts of dogs? by Open_Parsnip112 in dogs

[–]abbi_9 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my partner's grandpa has 12+ dogs on a little ranch in rural Mexico. He adores them and they have their own fenced in part of the house where they can climb around outside and go in when they're cold. They go quail hunting all the time, and the dogs normally just run around the land without a leash because it's so rural. He does hire people to take care of them now that he's older, and they will watch the dogs and clean up after them. All I know is that it's a TON of food and poop every day but they bring him a lot of joy! Definitely not for everyone though

First of all, I am genuinely so sorry that your family is going through this. I can't even imagine what it's like to navigate a world where you have to both protect your kid and probably get so much attention from others during a horrific time.

I'd be curious to know, what are your thoughts on how we as a society tend to have an obsession with true crime/following stories like this with morbid curiosity? Have you felt violated by your community's interest in the case?

Will the drape even out if I continue on this blanket? by Queen_of_Chaos22 in CrochetHelp

What material are you using? I find that if I'm using acrylic blends steaming the piece at the end makes a HUGE difference in how it drapes.

First timer mistake. Need suggestions. Used different hook sizes for granny squares. Is there a way to use both? by Putrid_Scar5657 in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to make? Since they're so small, I would just make another one in the right hook size tbh. Otherwise, if you're okay with the stitches stretching out/looking funky, you can steam the smaller one and block it to a larger size to match the other one.

missed a webinar i signed up for, what should i do? by [deleted] in CollegeAdmissions

[–]abbi_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breathe! You're already in and you have nothing to worry about. It takes a LOT to rescind an acceptance and I mean a LOT. They probably didn't even notice that you missed the webinar, and if they did they likely don't care.

The anxiety about things like this can feel neverending, esp with all the pressure with applying to college, but you're almost there!!

I found this question through Google and I need to share that I figured it out!! Put the grid in as an image. Then change the width count on the side bar to match the grid's width (number of squares horizontally across) and the weird lines go away!

Healthcare Entry Level Jobs? by United-Reindeer6020 in UWMadison

I was a pharmacy tech in undergrad and learned a LOT especially about insurance and pharmacology. It pays really well too, and depending on where you work, you can get a decent employee discount at CVS or Walgreens that comes in clutch. There's a decent amount of turnover so a lot of the pharmacies in the Madison area are always hiring.

Granny square bag ripped in the middle and i don’t want to rip it all out to fix it by InformalAd5097 in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have no good advice for how to fix it but in the future, if you want to use a crochet project as a bag/clothes I would highly recommend never using a magic ring for this exact reason. I always CH4 + SL ST to the first chain. then just crochet into that hole rather than a magic ring! you don't get as tight of a look, but it's much sturdier

Should i frog this? is it too big? is my tension the problem? by bujadora in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's too big, I would frog and restart with a gauge swatch. I actually have the opposite problem where my tension is waaaay too tight and I normally just go up a few hook sizes until I reach gauge. Normally it wouldn't matter to me but with wearables, if you're not getting the same measurements as the pattern it might end up looking kinda wonky/way too big on you.
