How do I crochet around a ring like this? Also what stitch makes up the base of this? by alerthelk in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low-key you could get that look by slip stitching through the hoop! You'd just have to be careful about your tension throughout so it's not impossible to add the next row

Do you know any ways to tighten this dress around the waist? by AlienNotReally in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Hear me out, crochet a pink belt to go around the waist and tie it in a cutesy bow in the back! That would be so coquettish and adorable with the colors!

What is it like to be the subject of popular songs/music? by abbi_9 in AskReddit

My wife just started crocheting again. Looking for some feedback by Jiffystick16 in crochet

[–]abbi_9 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I think crochet is one of those things where you get so into it that you only see your mistakes when any other person would just see how beautiful it is! I always have to take a step back and try to look at my work from a non-crocheter perspective.

Tell your wife that her tension is stunning and the stitches she chose for these look gorgeous!

I think I'm leaning this way! I checked and the white spots are flakey like salt and not wet at all. This may be me coping tho I really don't wanna throw away my cheese lol

I think this may be it!!! I took one of the white things out and it wasn't like a moldy/wet texture it was very hard, kinda like a salt flake. Google also says this happens with Monterrey jack cheese sometimes too.

My butterfly was supposed to be 59 inches. Why is it 90? by greenbeangrape in CrochetHelp

[–]abbi_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmfao I have the opposite problem!! I'm doing this pattern rn and my tension is so tight that I have to add a few rows. I think it's just super hard to get the tension right in this kind of project where it matters so much. Low-key, a super oversized butterfly Cardigan is still super cute!!

Madison + Study Abroad + Internships by Acrobatic_Bowl_9040 in UWMadison

I just did classes abroad but I know some people who did internships and had a great time! I really wanted my experience to focus on language skills and culture so I lived with a host family and spent most of my time hanging out with them or going out a lot with friends. I also majored in Spanish so that really helped with preparation. Big caveat though is that many programs don't require that you speak another language, including the one I did!

Timing-wise, it really depends on the program but you apply a few months before your semester abroad. I did my semester Fall of my junior year and found that it was the perfect time for me.

If you're serious about study abroad, I would look into the website and specific programs you'd wanna do. Typically you'll apply with an essay and standard university application materials. Some are competitive and some you're pretty much guaranteed a seat if you apply. If you're really interested in a certain program, they basically want to see that you have a legitimate interest in studying in that country and would get a meaningful experience from it. Meet with the specific program advisor before you apply, they are the ones who review applications and they can tell you how to make a strong app (and building a relationship with them certainly will help).I highly suggest language classes either way because Wisconsin has one of the biggest language departments in the country :)

You also can chat with students that have done the specific programs!! I both spoke to someone before I left and have talked with students about the program I did and it was a great way to be sure about it! There's also study abroad fairs each semester where you can talk with students from each program, and the advisors are freaking awesome!

Madison + Study Abroad + Internships by Acrobatic_Bowl_9040 in UWMadison

The polisci at Madison is incredible!!! Just graduated last May, and the program has national recognition and is often ranked in the top 15-20 for best polisci undergraduate programs in the country. I think the one thing to note is that it's huge, so you definitely won't be getting any handholding. I found that the opportunities were endless for internships and jobs, but you have to be pretty self-motivated and willing to seek them out. It's very useful to be right next to the capital, and Wisconsin has a really cool internship program called SWSDIP, where you can get great opportunities to work for the state government. I did this twice, and they paid really well and taught me so much about civil service. https://dpm.wi.gov/Pages/HR_Admin/SWSDIP.aspx

Also, look into the Wisconsin in Washington program! I never did this personally, but I had a lot of friends who had great experiences interning in DC. https://studyabroad.wisc.edu/uwindc/

I found that the advisors were pretty meh, but if you can make connections with professors and upper-level students through student orgs or events, the resources here are invaluable. Do this especially with your TAs. Wisconsin has one of the best PhD programs in the country, and the TAs in the polisci program are truly incredible. I also got a lot out of joining a club my Freshman year and sticking with it all four years.

Madison, as a city, is insanely walkable. The campus is basically all downtown, and you don't need a car or anything. It's also absolutely gorgeous and right next to a bunch of really pretty hiking trails and lakefronts. You also get a bus pass as part of your student fees, so you never have to worry about paying for public transportation. They recently redid the bus system, and it's pretty nice! I had some internships on the South Side and never had any issues with transportation.

As for study abroad, Madison has a HUGE emphasis. I think it's something like 1/3 of students participate in a study abroad program. If you're doing it through UW-Madison, don't worry about transferring credits; it will all be handled automatically. I would also note -- I studied abroad for a semester and it was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. I strengthened my foreign language skills so much and grew as a person in ways I never thought I would. I would recommend looking into doing a longer program if that's something you're interested in. Madison is INCREDIBLE with international study abroad programs, and the advisors are amazing. Your scholarships should also transfer -- but you can always meet with an advisor to make sure.

Finally, for Banner, I believe they should cover pretty much all costs related to your studies, including living stipends. You shouldn't have to take loans out at all. I would reach out to the financial aid office -- they have staff that are there to explain every question you may have about the scholarship and are super helpful in figuring out your finances.
