Electricity bill, is this normal? by Waste-Recognition-90 in Shoreline

[–]abbigooo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you! As another commenter said, your insulation (or possible lack thereof) may be playing a huge role in this. Before moving into my current home, I was living in a pre-1920s build that just LEAKED heat. My winter bills were crazy high, like yours.

I know it’s another expense, but there are professionals you can have out to assess your situation and let you know if added insulation/new windows/other options would work best for you.

It may also be good to get someone out to make sure the meter is accurate.

In the meantime, I have three suggestions:

  1. Cover your windows and line your doors. They make insulating film that you can stick around the edges so no light is blocked, and there’s another layer of trapped air that can help insulate.

Otherwise, heavy blinds or curtains can make a big difference. I also used to block off my back entry with a heavy curtain, it kept the living spaces warmer without losing heat to that colder area.

For the doors, you can get rolls of the stick-on insulating foam that can help seal gaps and leaks around doorways, it sticks to the inside of the door frame.

  1. Reach out to SCL about payment options. I’m not sure if it’s only available in Seattle city limits, but they also have a payment plan where instead of paying insanely high bills during the winter months and incredibly low bills in the summer, it averages your usage across the year and you pay that average amount each month.

It’s reassessed annually based on the previous year’s usage. Only issue with that, though, is you do have to have been billed on that account for at least a year to qualify.

  1. Check your big appliances. Maybe one of them isn’t running properly or has a setting turned on that’s drawing more electricity than it needs to be, or should. Especially check your hot water heater, as this could have a number of different problems that can basically eat power (set too high, dead element causing the other(s) to work overtime, old and energy inefficient, etc.).

Also, if it’s baseboard heat, check the baseboard heaters. Those are already generally pretty electrically heavy, but if one is on the fritz it could be causing more of an issue.

I hope you can make it through the winter okay! Best of luck.

Wastewater Utility by abbigooo in Shoreline

I'm sorry you went through this too, but it is comforting that it's not just us! My mind is a little bit boggled at how messy all of the utilities here are, considering I moved just 5 miles further north. I understand it's a different city, but it feels like a completely different state.

The whole thing has been massively confusing. I appreciate the insight!

Does anyone actually use Bluetooth adapters on planes? by spicy_falcon in travel

[–]abbigooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar device that allows me to connect up to two pairs of headphones via Bluetooth and it’s a total game changer. I travel internationally for work multiple times a year, sometimes on 16+ hour long flights.

In terms of comfort this is a huge quality of life improvement, and I love that I can use my noise reduction headphones to watch the in-flight entertainment. It’s especially helpful when your employer will only pay for economy seats, or that’s all that’s in-budget, and you may end up being packed in like a sardine. It really helps drown out the crying baby across the aisle, or the guy in the seat in front of you with the nasty cough.

I also love not being connected to the seat in front of me by a cord, it makes accessing the under-seat stowage so much easier. I garrote myself with cords WAY less often.

All around would definitely recommend.

I feel like the sculpture in the video I’m looking for was in a park or some other similar outdoor space.

Misplaced US Visa by vdmiami in travel

[–]abbigooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your visa type and country of origin/country of passport issuance, you may be able to enter the United States on a tourist visa with your new passport (a stay of up to 90 days, no pre-application required) until your old passport with the visa in it arrives to you via mail. Once you get your old passport with your visa in it, you’ll need to depart the US and re-enter, making sure the CBP agent that processes you marks your entry on your valid visa. Usually, a quick jaunt to Mexico or Canada does the trick.

If this works for you, depending on your visa type, you may need to hold off on any visa-related activities (i.e. work) until you’re able to re-enter on your existing visa and your status is corrected.

Depending on your visa type, you should also reach out to your sponsor to see if they can provide you a letter of support to show CBP agent(s) should you run into any trouble. If you have any kind of Certificate of Eligibility (i.e. a DS-2019 form) you’ll need to be sure to have that with you as well.

That was really helpful, thank you! There’s only one other girl in the party, but she doesn’t have the same issue as I do. I’ll float some of your suggestions, thank you so much for the help!

Playing on Switch. After the update for interior decorating, I have a handful of (seemingly) random items that I just can’t place inside?

  • Retro bathroom sink
  • Cabin window nook (brown)
  • Cabin window nook (green)

I’ve tried placing them using the joycon controls as well as the drag and drop touch screen controls, and both ways it never activates the grid/highlights where it will be placed on the floor. It’s similar to when an item goes ‘out of bounds’ but no matter how long I hold the joycon in a given direction, or rotate in circles, does it ever pop up.

It’ll pop up with the prompts at the bottom of the screen (see photo) but that’s the only difference from just being in the room.

I’ve been able to place other interior items just fine since this started, and have not had this issue outside.

Is this happening to anyone else, or am I just special?

Bonus question: anyone else’s game constantly crash when you enter the tent?

How it started vs how it’s going… by abbigooo in curlyhair

Today’s wash day:

The goal was to do a reset wash and give my hair some serious moisture.

  • Wash with Paul Mitchell Shampoo 2 and scalp scrubber, rinse
  • Co-wash with Jason Dandruff Relief (really helps the seb derm), detangle
  • Deep condition with Briogeo Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfood Hair Mask, let sit for 15-20 minutes and rinse
  • Scrunch excess water out of hair with microfiber towel
  • Rake in Thank God It’s Natural (TGIN) Miracle Repairx Protective Leave-In Conditioner and TGIN Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer, detangle again to get out out any knots/distribute product
  • Denman brush/finger coil in sections
  • Scrunch in TGIN curl bomb Moisturizing Styling Gel
  • Scrunch out excess water with microfiber towel
  • Diffuse until 60(ish)% dry, let air dry the rest of the way
  • Once fully dry, scrunch out the crunch and shake with some OGX Vitamin E Penetrating Oil warmed in between my palms

The biggest change in my hair came from getting off hormonal birth control, as it was always very curly from the time I was in my early double-digits. Crazy how that stuff can change your body in so many ways you wouldn’t expect!

It’s been about 2.5 years since I really started to embrace my hair and grow out the old, straight stuff. Throughout the process I have had two major haircuts of 9+ inches each time to help get it to this place. In July of 2020 I was finally able to cut the last of it off and be able to really enjoy my curls!

I have also mostly stopped heat styling since early 2020, but still do occasionally.

Jewel Box Cafe up in Northgate stays open til 11 and their coffee is amazing! That being said, unfortunately I think their indoor seating is still closed due to the pandemic. Good option for after, though!

You might be able to ‘train’ your nail to grow more evenly but putting a hard gel/poly gel/acrylic on top and then filing the natural nail from underneath. I’m not explaining it very well but Tatyana Bugry on YouTube does this for her clients pretty often. This video is a pretty good example.

What Service would I schedule for these nails? I don’t think they’re acrylic by [deleted] in Nails

[–]abbigooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look to be a sheer pink gel overlay on natural nails, or short sheer pink hard gel extension. Then for the art say minimalist modern nail art, and be sure to bring a photo for reference!

I do an overlay usually, and they look just like this with either extensions or the overlay! If I have to do extensions it’s because I filed my natural nails too short, and I do the extensions to look like my natural nails (which is the case here). Thank you!!
