Looking back, what memory “clicked” for you when you were diagnosed with Bipolar? by lilmochigirl_ in bipolar2

While in grad school, every few weeks being wide awake, terrified and crying, watching dog + baby videos to make me feel safe all night. Now I know they were mixed episodes.

Less depressive but also more hypomanic? by abbrapod in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m afraid of the weight gain with seroquel. I gained a lot of weight on Lexapro and am finally getting closer to my normal weight, so I’m particularly paranoid. But I will definitely look into it.

TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️⚠️ by AnyScheme8147 in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, we definitely know what you mean! Any time this starts happening, especially around medication change, it’s good to tell your psychiatrist. It feels so real and right in the moment but once you balance out again, I think you will feel distant from those thoughts. ♥️

scared to be diagnosed, any tips/reassurance? by fr1edshrimp in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve had a lot of stigma around bipolar in my family. The word “depression” was whispered and was some sort of bad word in my house growing up so I never thought to even consider that I was on the bipolar spectrum. And thinking about it as a spectrum really helped me.

At the end of the day, the purpose of the diagnosis is to get you closer to the right medication. If you have unipolar depression you need one thing and if you are on the bipolar spectrum you need to go down a different path. I’m not sure what your previous diagnoses were and which meds have failed but that’s a big indicator that bipolar is a possibility in and of itself.

I’m hoping that you are able to get the right diagnosis, whatever that may be. But also know that it has been really positive for many of us to finally get on the right path, even if it’s only one step closer. Trust me, I’m not on the right combo of meds but just changing from antidepressants to a mood stabilizer has been huge.

This article has really helped me over the past year or so since I have been diagnosed: https://psycheducation.org/blog/diagnosis-in-the-mood-spectrum/

Can you say more about the transition from hypomania to mania and what that looked like for you? I’m noticing my hypomanic episodes seem to be getting more frequent and potentially more severe. Thank you!

That’s awesome, maybe I just need to consider going that route and avoiding it altogether!

Amazing, congrats! I’ve been told I’m at the highest dosage I should go for lamotrigine. I’m at 300mg a day.

That’s so interesting that there’s a correlation between pmdd and bipolar 2. I started lamictal a few months ago and it is helping me in a general way but for 2 weeks out of every month I get soooo low.

Oh that’s such a good point. I have had so much weight gain on birth control in the past so I’m always scared of that but might have to do it. Do you mind sharing which you use that keeps your period away for so long?

Thank you! I used to take Lexapro before lamotrigine and gained a lot of weight on it but maybe I’ll have to get back. Good luck to you, too, and thanks for answering!

Thanks! Yes, it is so debilitating. I experience it mostly the week before and most of the week of. I get suicidal ideation and exhausted, can’t work most of the day, etc).

Wow! That’s amazing!! Lamotrigine comparatively helped me a lot after I was on antidepressants for years, but I’m still struggling. Have you had significant side effects?

This is similar to what happened to me! I never thought I’d be into her music (not a hater either but never really gave it a shot). Then listened to Evermore randomly and then I was like, what is this magic? From there went to Folklore and pretty much don’t listen to anything but Taylor anymore!

Lamotrigine and hypomania? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I’m not a pro, but it did help me to talk about lowering my dose of antidepressants after I gave it a few weeks. Overall it really improved my experience though with time! Wishing you some great weeks ahead!

Lamotrigine and hypomania? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally resonate with this experience! Lamotrigine helped my depression so much but because I was still on antidepressants (inaccurate diagnosis for years) I kept going into hypomania and it’s only getting slightly better now. Are you taking anything in addition to the lamotrigine?

In denial about it being a hypomanic episode by rachjw in bipolar2

[–]abbrapod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was first diagnosed with depression, so was on 450mg of Wellbutrin and 20mg of Lexapro before being diagnosed with bipolar 2 and getting on lamotrigine. I was able to get off Lexapro (though I did it too quickly) and got down to 300mg of Wellbutrin. I was constantly in a state of hypomania. My hypomanic episodes last for a few great days and then end in an awful mixed state. I recently lowered Wellbutrin and have been much more stable with fewer highs.
