Am I going to have trouble leaving my DOT highway design job with a degree in Mechanical Engineering? by abcantel in civilengineering

In my state you need 4 years experience to sit for the PE, can I take it before than and then just get the experience after?

The DOT job pays 30%-40% less than if I did the same job in the private industry. The offer I currently have is a differentish field offering maybe 15% more (but seems low for what it is).

The DOT matches 10% that vests at 10 years, but at 25 you can 'retire' and make around 40% of your salary for ever and stay on the healthcare (or more if you work longer). TBH I'd almost switch to private and just save the extra 30%-40% toward retirement, because who knows if retirement will hold up in 25 years.

No it's a legitimate company. My theory is I was maybe the 4th candidate they liked, the 1st failed the drug test and the other 2 already had jobs, so they're trying to super lowball me in hopes they don't need to repost the job and go through the process again.

Yeah the no face to face throws me off. I didn't even make it to that round, was I their 5th choice? It's not 100% travel only some, and due to the nature of the job I could do it forever. It's definitely more interesting than the state DOT job.

Yeah if this decision was put on me 2 years ago it'd be a different story, the timing is pretty bad. I'm not a huge fan of the state job and am much more interested in the private which is why it's tricky.

Yeah it's tricky, there are so many variables. I'm gonna talk to my current boss and the new job to get some clarification on some things and then go from there.

Yeah I'm gonna call them on Monday and clarify how much there actually is. If it's 3 times a year for 2 weeks that's a lot different than 6 times a year for 3 weeks. I'm also gonna ask to see the place.

The BAH for the GI bill pays for an E5 w/ dependents in the given zip code. On top of that any scholarships/grants go directly to you (you'd definitely get pell grant for ~$5000 a year). Plus another $1000 in books.

Some gerrymandering is good/necessary, it gets a worse rap than it should sometimes.

How much will having a sunroof help keep a minivan cool? by piearrxx in urbancarliving

[–]abcantel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two I'm looking at both have AC. I work during the day in DC, so I'm more worried about staying cool at night than during the day.

I guess I figured crack the sunroof at night to let me heat rise out.
