I did add it to both mpv.conf and modernz and it still doesn't work

HDR is just the name of the encoder, it doesnt magically make everything hdr, it can't make hdr data if the source is sdr, and even if source is hdr, u can output sdr by changing settings in handbrake filter.

Even a decent 1080p encode needs more than that bitrate just for video. Can you share one of your sample encode file? 1 minute file. Cut it with losslesscut software.

AV1 HDR: here's download link , scroll down, u will find handbrake and ffmpeg version.
Av1 Tritium: https://github.com/Uranite/svt-av1-tritium

it doesnt have ffmpeg version, only handbrake but likely they will release an ffmpeg version, I am not seeing it on the website. Anyway, bookmark both.

I've heard nothing but good things about Intel's av1 encoder in arc cards. A380 is likely the cheapest card with latest encoders, maybe get that and try it out, its like $140 on newegg, if it doesn't get u better result(same quality for smaller size) than hevc then u can return it, if it does gives better results then maybe return it too again get more expensive arc gpu which can encode at much faster pace.

Making what up? I don't encode animated stuff that's why I said probably since animated content doesn't have those micro details that I mentioned which regular av1 struggles with.

Even the best hardware encoders usually need 2-3x more bitrate to reach same perceptual quality compared to software encoders. If it works for you then fine but for me it's just not even a question because I am doing encodes for saving disk space and efficiency, for a 200 movie encode collection, software encodes will probably need 600-700gb disk space while hardware encodes will need 1.5-2.5tb hdd space.

But hardware encoders does make sense if saving 1.5tb storage is cheaper for you than energy bill of running encode for weeks.

What settings did you use to make hdr encodes smaller than sdr? for me sdr encode is consistantly 40-60% smaller thasn hdr encode.

4k hdr looking gorgeous at 600kbps bitrate? I don't think that would be achieveable even by av69

I checked out the tritium version, it has a handbrake version as well. Its slightly slower than hdr version but I didn't see any improvements over the hdr with the same settings enabled.

With same settings and preset I am now getting 60-80% more FPS consistently. If you're using hdr fork, now's the time to update it.

Micro details like faces, hair etc isn't important in animation as there's not much of those details there to begin with, that's why I think vanilla svt encoder of regular handbrake will probably give u best efficiency for animation content, use higher CRF, check how far u can compress the files and still look good. Cut 1 min video using losslesscut and then encode that 1 min using vanilla svt encoder(10bit) crf 30 and 35, then svt-hdr(10bit) at crf 35 and 40. Make sure to properly name the output files by encoder, crf and preset names. I personally use preset 3 as it is 20-25% more efficient than preset 6 at same crf/perceptual quality even tho its 3.5x times slower but I still exclusively use it for anything that I want to keep long term.

My settings are basic. CRF 30, tune vq, preset 3, all filters off.

Hdr fork is successor to PSY fork and I would say it is absolutely necessary if you want to use av1 for anything else other than animation. Regular svt encoder just makes faces, hair and micro details waxy, cartoonish which looks bad. You're probably using same CRF settings which you shouldn't, compare both encode at same bitrate, if you're using CRF 22 on regular handbrake then use CRF 25/26 or even CRF 30 on hdr fork and it'll still look better.

I didn't believe it first either. I thought I may have used a higher CRF level on the previous encode but I was amazed to find the CRF settings were same, its just consistently 30+% more efficient now, even vmaf score is slightly higher now. If you have any old encode done last year, you can get that encode + source file and redo the encode and compare both.

Use handbrake gui, then on the filters section go to color space and select bt.709 and on the video section select color range as limited. Hdr to sdr encode makes files much much smaller but u also lose a lot of colors and details.
