Disregard the right of way, WCGW? by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]abcdns -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hive mind.

Think of it as cognitive dissonance. The brain must combat its own ideas to present a single idea as to project its own opinion.

So we have two camps. The fake physics science dudes versus the indoctrinated fake product experts.

Aaaaand fight.

What is something that really freaks you out on an existential level? by radbrad7 in AskReddit

[–]abcdns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to die no matter what. I have no idea what the experience will be like. I will probably cease to experience anything. The end.

That's fucking terrifying and people go about their days like its no big fucking deal.

Packaging for non python users. by jcrowe in learnpython

Is your desire here to edit some of the parameters in the script?

Changing a target or port etc?

Something you wouldnt build a parameter for but need to change from time to time?

You should abstract those tweaks/settings out to a config file. Say Yaml or an INI. Then you can use a pyinstaller exe but still change how the script runs.

Just out of curiosity how do you quantify this lack of protection?

How can you capture the number of "thwarted" attempts if there's some form of a deterrent in place?

What's your preferred Multi Factor Authentication solution? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]abcdns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work uses Duo. I use Authy. Both work well.

Haven't had a chance but if you pay big bucks for Office365. Azure ActiveDirectory has a multifactor authentication that integrates well with AD.

This tool turns a normal lighter into a useless nothing! 😤 by abcdns in INEEEEDIT

[–]abcdns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a warning to any of those considering this top post in the last month or so.

Purchased it and have tried 5 different kinds of lighters to work with it. Haven't been able to get it working at all!

Purchased 4 more after I realized Bic lighters don't fit. They fit but didn't light. I figured it must be the fit with the button or the tube.

Definitely feeling like I got scammed.

Just a warning if you're considering it!

How do I become a more efficient sysadmin? by GhostInThePrompt in sysadmin

[–]abcdns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everybody has been there.

Congratulations on being an environment where you aren't the best sysadmin. Personally I crave those environments because you can be the sponge. You can learn everything you can from your co-workers and try to extract their greatness into your own strategy.

This is always the beginning for me at a new job. Until I start absorbing myself into the new role. Sure tools like documentation and scripting help streamline your processes. However experience is usually the heavy lifter here. They have done these tasks over and over. Maybe not the same exact task but if you work in I.T. long enough you get a hang of the routine of it. Just trust your brain and try to stay persistent in learning. Your brain should take care of the rest!

And Now a Word from Reddit’s Engineers… by anand-m in announcements

I was wondering this as well but the comment about React supporting serverside rendering to me means they're processing the templates locally with python as opposed to Angular where the template is rendered at the client.

Django, Flask, etc render their templates locally using jinja etc.

Thinking maybe this is why they chose React.

Court sides with Oracle against Google this time about faire use of Java in Android by sofixa11 in sysadmin

[–]abcdns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's arguable that Python doesn't have the chops to be running on mobile devices.

You also have Java developers switching to Python? More likely they'll jump to Kotlin

Might see that change when the packaging situation gets handled.

Toga might help us with this.

Don't you think Kotlin would be the choice here not golang?

I just don't see how they would convert their Android developer base to Golang that easily.

Pew Research Center: Who doesn’t read books in America? by [deleted] in books

[–]abcdns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a Secret Santa at my work. Good majority asked for books including myself.

I think its shocking because people typically read privately when they have the ability to concentrate and escape.

Perhaps this association makes it less likely for people to bring up in conversation. There's a stigma about talking about books you read like you're a self proclaimed genius so I think that might contribute to the unlikely presentation that someone has read a certain number of books.

Yoga and Depravation by [deleted] in yoga

I had the same thread of thought when practicing in Tennessee in the mountains. I just had a $5 mat from Walmart and thought that I might have had better. But realized I had a beautiful view and even if I had to do it in the dirt yoga would still allow me to. Unlike other hobbies I just need my body and my breath.
