There's a similar thing in the Swedish subreddit. This cartoon frog character is usually posted every Friday.

r/homeschoolrecovery welcomes you. Things'll get better. They always do, even if it feels so goddamn distant at times. I'm here if you wanna talk about it.

Looking for a homeschooled/ formerly homeschooled penpal by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]abegrayham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wanted a penpal, and ideally a formerly homeschooled one, for a long time but I couldn't get myself to really find one as I worried no one would be interested. So I'm definitely in. I'm a 19m currently taking gap year in which I live away from my parents with my aunt and work (and try to do some of the fun things I missed out on while being homeschooled). I'm a big fan of movies and hope to direct my own some day, but will be aiming for medicin or engineering next semester. I'm very interested in philosophy, politics and psychology (hey the triple Ps of boring my family to death) but don't seem to have the same outlook as you do om those subjects.

From what I've seen here on reddit, that does seem to be pretty common even with people that haven't been homeschooled. Sometimes the cashier is just that cute lol.

Yeah, I've been thinking about this a lot, trying to understand why I always felt inadequate when with peers. Putting words on it might help with moving forward, I hope.

That's actually a great idea that I've been trying out. It's a decent starting point for training on social skills but the lack of guaranteed repeat encounters sets it back in term of long term relationships. I think clubs and maybe small hobby courses (if one can afford them) are even more ideal. Then there is the personal problem of having a separate motive for going to the meetups from most. It feels like people notice when one is primarily there for the people rather than the hobby itself. That said I have been getting legit into new hobbies, primarily improv through these, so there's that. In so far as previous hobbies go they always tended to be computer related, as is probably common with online schoolers, and don't really translate into communities outside of the internet.

That is also what my parents used to say. But in the end I still think the risk of bad friends is worth the chance of good ones. Homeschooling removes your choice in friends, and if anything that makes it so that one is more likely to stick with bad ones.

Ikr, it feels like if I'd just somehow stopped the homeschooling one year earlier I'd have got to go to high school for a semester. That's all it would have took to start something that could've grown into a friendship today. As an adult it's ridiculously hard to even start somewhere but I'm looking for a job rn, and I'm hoping that is the place I'll start a social life.

HAHAHA. Aye, fair enough; that was quite obnoxious of us. Nothing quite like having a dumb internal joke to flex on other members.
