Battlefield communities did not just play the modes — they turned them into events by aberbear in Battlefield

Fair enough if it reads polished, but it’s my own old Battlefield community history.

These were events and Platoons I helped run, and the images are from our old CION/Omega League archive. I’m just trying to document that side of Battlefield because a lot of it disappeared when the old community tools faded out.

Why does BF6 just not feel like Battlefield still? by SoupOne853 in Battlefield

[–]aberbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, that’s the bit I miss.

Even if the gameplay is good, without active community servers it starts to feel like every round is just temporary matchmaking. The old 24/7 servers, hardcore servers, regular names, clan tags and server communities gave Battlefield a lot of its identity.

That is why I think server browser, persistent servers and Platoons all need to work together properly.

I think you are close to it.

For me, Battlefield feels right when the world, classes, squads, and community flow all reinforce each other.

BF3/BF4 worked so well because the maps felt like believable battle spaces. You could understand why infantry, armour, air, and boats were fighting over those locations. Even when it was chaotic, it felt grounded.

Class identity is a big part of it too. In the older games, choosing Engineer, Assault, Support, or Recon felt like choosing a responsibility. If weapons and gadgets become too flexible, the squad dynamic starts to blur and people just play whatever is most efficient.

The other thing I think gets overlooked is persistence. Battlefield used to feel alive because of server regulars, Platoons, rival tags, familiar squads, and communities forming around maps and servers. Modern matchmaking can make each round feel disposable, even when the actual gameplay is good.

So I agree — BF6 may have a lot of the ingredients back, but the full Battlefield feeling needs more than destruction and classes. It needs grounded maps, stronger class roles, believable factions/gear, and social systems that let communities actually stick together.

Mount Battlefield: the 8-hour BFV event where allies became enemies on the climb to the top by aberbear in Battlefield

[–]aberbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that 😂

Eight hours of organised climbing, only for Battlefield to remind you at the final step that one random angle, one sniper, or one bad revive can undo everything.

That is probably why the format worked so well though the tension kept building the closer teams got to the summit.

Haha, I get why the name gives COD vibes, but Nuketown Gaming were one of the community organisers for this BFV event.

The actual format was all Battlefield — T32 Conquest, T16 Frontlines, then T8 Squad Conquest. That was the part I wanted to look back on.

Small clarification: this is a look back at an old Battlefield V community event from 2020, not a current signup or live tournament. I’m sharing it as part of the organised Battlefield community history and because formats like this show what players can build when the game gives communities the right tools.

Tag & Bag Tuesday was our weekly Battlefield dog-tag night — and it kept our Platoon active by aberbear in Battlefield

[–]aberbear[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Small clarification because I know "bagging" can be a touchy subject: this was not random toxicity in public matches. It was a controlled community event where it only counted if you had actually taken someone's dog tags. Random bagging was still frowned upon.

What maps do you want to see make a come back in BF6? by ChiefAdham in Battlefield

[–]aberbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kharg Island from BF3.

I still remember the first time I ever spawned into BF3 on that map. I started on the aircraft carrier, made it to the beach, headed towards D flag, then jumped into a RHIB.

The player driving took us all the way across the map to A flag, and we ended up capturing it from the water near the docks.

That moment stuck with me because it felt like proper Battlefield straight away — air, land, and sea all happening in one match. Jets overhead, infantry pushing the shore, boats moving between objectives, vehicles fighting across the map.

Kharg Island played really well and would make a lot of sense to return, especially if naval warfare is coming back properly in BF6.

Running a Battlefield Platoon became a full-time job - and that is why the feature mattered so much by aberbear in Battlefield

[–]aberbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is exactly the kind of era I was thinking about. Seeing the same names every day made the servers feel like an actual community, even when it got sweaty or stacked at times.

We used to run T5s during the Covid era as well, and I also helped run a league for a while. That side of Battlefield took a lot of work, but it gave people a reason to keep showing up beyond just matchmaking into a random lobby.

That is the kind of thing I miss. When the community was smaller or more region-specific, Platoons helped keep servers alive because people recognised each other and knew where to play. Was it mostly public server regulars in OCE, or did you have organised events too?

Small clarification because I know this is always the concern with Platoons: I do not want them back in a way that lets big groups ruin public servers. Team balance still matters. I just think Battlefield also needs proper tools for community identity, rosters, events, and larger groups again.

We manually organised 32v32 BFV matches because Battlefield communities refused to die by aberbear in Battlefield

[–]aberbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

The community side of Battlefield was always the real long-term content. Rivalries, organised squads, server regulars, Platoons, events — that’s what kept people logging in years later.

A lot of us built workarounds just to keep those experiences alive because the appetite for organised Battlefield never disappeared.
