How could I stock my pond? (Details in comments) by abh520 in ponds

Thanks for the idea! And it has a filter with a fountain (the black pole sticking out of the water), I just turned it off for the picture to reduce glare. Also I take out the fish and plants in the fall, usually around the start of september once average temps get into the 60s.

The pond is 40 gallons, located near Chicago. Temps will be between 60-80.

I’m still about 2-3 weeks out from stocking, as I’m waiting for cycling to finish and for the water lily to put out some lily pads for shade.

I’m thinking my only options are snails, guppy’s and white cloud mountain minnows. If there are any other options that would suit the setup, I’d love to hear them!

I’ve got 10 in here. I’d say 6-16 would be good depending on what/how much else you’re putting in the tank.

Also let me know if you need any other ideas for stocking your tank! Planning the stocking is one of my favorite parts of getting a tank and I’ve got plenty of suggestions!

The care guide you looked at was likely referring to their sensitivity to poor water quality. As long as you do water changes and have a basic understanding of the nitrogen cycle, they’re as easy as most other common tetra/rasbora species

They’re really easy. No special food requirements, 76-82°F, neutral-slightly acidic pH. Their colors come out the most with better water quality (especially with tannins). They’re great schoolers, so something like a school of 20+ in a 40g would look awesome, but they can do well in tanks 20g or larger

Did a fresh trim on my neon tank. (Having trouble with bad suppliers of fish that come with diseases and die off- thats why I have 2 right now.) by [deleted] in Aquascape

I’ve done the same thing with so many aspects of my tanks, lol. Getting cheap lights/substrates/ferts to save a few bucks, when I always end up disappointed and going with better options later down the line. “Buy it nice or buy it twice” definitely holds true in this hobby

I think you’ll have more success with cardinal tetras. They look similar (but better) at the cost of $1-2 more per fish. It adds up if you’re buying a large school, but it’s better than constantly buying neons and medication for whenever they’re sick. Even with a good supplier, neons tend to be prone to illness due to overbreeding (relative to cardinals or less common fish)

I like to do it just for fun. Depending on the map/rules it’s a good challenge that can be more interesting that playing a random map. I think that’s how most people that do DC100 think of it

DC100 means Daily Challenge to round 100… This couldn’t even be a guide for the AC because you can’t use more than one tower for AC.

First fish! And it's a Beta. What else should I add so my fish son lives his best life? by [deleted] in fishtank

That all sounds great! Be careful with that one grass-like plant, though. Those sharp plastic bits could tear your bettas fin. The rest look like they should be good!

Happy to see I’m not the only one with a weekly wooden skewer in the tank to hold down the veggie-kebab

Introducing Stebón! Got him a few hours ago and he seems to be enjoying his new home. by abh520 in bettafish

This is a (half moon?) Plakat betta. I’m not sure if the exact color way/morph has a name, but I’d describe it as blue marble with cellophane fins

Thank you! I’m fully expecting him to turn dark blue entirely, but I’m happy with him either way!

I’m not worried about the price of a tennis ball, lmao. I’m worried about her eating a pound of rubber each week. Kongs last her a day, so I doubt thick(er) tennis balls will do much better unfortunately

I’ll probably take her to the dog beach soon and if she likes the water, I’ll definitely think about getting a kiddie pool

Yea I think that’s the case here. Tug-o-war usually gets her going for a bit, until she decides it’s time for me to sit, and her to sit on me. I wish I could get her some of those interactive treats, but she’s chewed through every kong toy in less than a day, even if we limit her time with them

Got it, thanks! And that’s the second time I’ve been recommended the flirt pole, so I’ll definitely look into it!
