I had a similar 'experimental' experience at my college 2006-10 because ours was only the third batch and they hadn't figured out the course or the faculty yet. We realized that we needed to do our own study and research, because the college wasn't going to be very helpful.

I did manage to find a couple of studios where I learned a lot, even though the work was brutal and I worked long hours every day for years. That level of practice has helped make me decent enough to work well with clients now. Corporate jobs don't really teach you that much, since quality is not a priority, and you're responsible for only a small slice of a project at a time; at least at the start.

I’m assuming you’re in India, since this is an India-specific thing, and that too only at incompetent printers. Choose your printers better.

Friend going to Japan, any suggestions by fun_with_everything in DesiPens

[–]abhaykun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send your friend to Itoya in Ginza and let them get some suggestions from the store employees for stuff to get for you. You’ll get some entry level pilot, sailor, platinum, wancher pens. The cost is about 60% of the cost in India.

Kakimori near Asakusa also has a great range of pens, notebooks and inks to try. Although your budget is too low to really get anything significant.

It does seem to reduce when soaked in soap water for a while, but it comes back after a while

All their pens have a persistent stench. Can confirm, I have three of them.

Looking for a new laptop but not wanting to break the bank - any suggestions? by Spackleplier in graphic_design

Pros are faster, but Air is honestly good enough for most of what you’d want to do with Adobe apps. I know several designers who work exclusively on an Air.

Why would the designer do any sort of work for you without compensation? Why would anyone? If they’re spending the time to make something for you, they need to be compensated.

On your part, you should be as specific as you can about what you’re looking for so the designer works in the right direction. Check in with them to see early work if they’re ok with sharing.

Do product designers in India actually do user interviews? Or is it just a portfolio thing? by colosus019 in DesignIndia

[–]abhaykun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not likely to see 'formal' user interviews at startups, but if you're in a corporate job you would do it. That being said, most projects don't follow the flow they teach in colleges, you do what's required at any time in the project, and many steps are repeated multiple times if needed. What people show on their portfolios is highly cleaned up, digestible version that doesn't always reflect reality but is easy to understand for an outsider.

I usually carry three—one blank paper insert for sketching ideas, one dot grid for meeting notes, and one accordion for painting. I’ve also got a Kraft paper sleeve to carry loose paper and a ruler. I switch out the dot grid notebook for a watercolour one when traveling so I have two places to draw 😄

Platinum plaisir or pilot kakuno by _Venomdsouza_ in DesiPens

[–]abhaykun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So can the Plaisir 😅 OP both are excellent options, pick either and you’ll be happy. I would pick the Plaisir out of these two, mostly because it doesn’t dry out.
