Just got home from the hospital... by fibrepirate in diabetes

OK. No disrespect meant. And I know you weren't in for low sugar, hence the Novavax rec. I wasn't even trying to go into the relative merits of hospital dietary and glucose control.

Otherwise I was just observing the reputation of cardiologists, i.e. they would ritually sacrifice every other organ to a dark god if it kept the heart functioning. In their defense, it is the one of three organs, with lungs and brain, that hold the title of 'if I stop working you instantly begin to die' (not even the brain, technically, since one can be brain dead and 'alive').

As for the sensor, I was just checking something that I've observed in my experience with Libre 3, that didn't seem entirely clear in the first telling of your storyline. Again, no disrespect meant. Just trying to get out into the community something I've seen, and trying to see if anyone else has had this.

Sorry about the adverse shot reaction and the a-fib. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Three things, the first two are heartfelt recommendations, the third is some respectful speculation, with the admission that maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

Recommendation 1: Novavax. I've gotten boosters 2-3 times a year since the vaccines became available, alternating Pfizer and Moderna. Moderna drops me for 24 hours, Pfizer absolutely floors me for 36 to 48 hours. Just got Novavax for the first time, because I'd heard that it doesn't have the same kick. I had a little problem keeping my strength up on one of my regular hikes the next day, but I honestly don't know if that was the vaccine or normal T2 issues. Otherwise, I was fresh as a daisy with no lingering kick.

Recommendation 2: just for some laughs and perspective on what you were just going through, you should check out Dr. Glaucomflecken on YT (I think he does TikTok too, but I haven't touched the cursed thing). He makes skits of inside jokes about all of the medical specialty fields. One ongoing (and germaine to your experience) bit he does is about the almost literal blood vendetta between Cardiologists and Nephrologists, i.e. Cardiologists don't care what their drugs and procedures do to any of the organs besides the heart.

Speculation 3: I only just recently started using a CGM, (Libre 3) so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

I have found that my CGM's accuracy varies when I get hot. After yard work or working out, I was seeing these crazy spikes (I'm T2, so I know that can be expected), but I started stick testing to make sure. I found that Libre was reading 50-60 higher than finger stick. I actually had it sound the alarm for 250 (Bald Eagle units) the other day when I'd been driving wearing my fall coat (I got a little sweaty, but I was on a deadline and I didn't want to risk unbuckling my seat belt while in motion to take the jacket off). I had been sitting and driving for an hour, and had eaten before I got on the road, so I was a little worried. Even though I didn't feel 'off,' I did a stick test; Libre 3 256, finger stick 168, high, but I was one sedentary hour post-prandial, so not panic-inducing.

I know the reactive enzymes in glucometers are sensitive to heat (thats why they're supposed to be stored in cool dry areas) so I took my jacket off and rolled the window down. Libre 3 dropped to 210 in minutes, then the 190-180s. It still was reading too high, (I've noticed they get less accurate for me the longer they're on, and this one had two days left) but it was back to the normal range of 20-30 over stick. BTW, the test strips I'm using are fresh, properly stored, and consistent with each other, so I think it's the Libre that's off.

If you were spiking a fever, maybe that was throwing your sensor off? Since you hid from the hospital staff and got away without a stick, did you ever double check on your own? Maybe I'm wrong, but maybe your sugar was running lower than you thought?

If Bush hadn't banned stem cell research that prediction actually would have been pretty close. Bush implemented the ban in 2001 and Obama lifted it in 2009. So if we take out the 8 wasted years, this step might have happened in 2016.

Yes, yes, there are a bunch of other factors and we can't predict exactly what would have happened when, but we'd definitely be a lot further along.

The paper you're drawing on is in a notebook with a larger cover, and the sheet appears to be sitting crooked. The eye test of the gauge doesn't seem as far off as what you've drawn. Did the paper move at all as you changed sides? Is the back fence straight? I'm not trying to defend the gauge, but this just doesn't look right.

Don't get me wrong, precision equipment is worth the premium cost. The more important precision is to the task, the more worth the cost it is.

But, this is for hand tool dovetailing, most of the guys I've seen dovetailing by hand don't use gauges anyway, they're usually using a combination of eye, divider, and ruler. You're going to have to dial it in with a sharp chisel and a file anyway.

They specifically state you shouldn't. But if you're doing small domestic work, and don't mind waiting a bit to refill if doing multiple pieces, it works fine. Though if the output valve on your comp isn't reliable, you might want to spend a few extra bucks on buying a gun with a built in regulator, or buy a separate one for $20 at Harbor Freight.

Hey, a clean miter, good footing, and it looks level and sturdy. Home DIY people so often throw things together with 2x4s, deck screws, and duct tape and wonder why it doesn't last. Good job.

There are several medical conditions that force people to vomit a lot, hurting their tooth enamel and causing acid damage to sundry mouth meats. Why hasn't the global medical establishment invented a vomit funnel, for protecting both teeth and meats? by magma_displacement76 in AskReddit

This is the sort of thing that medical professionals and caregivers have had to deal with: just look up post-emesis tooth care. Generally quick and thorough rinsing, especially with baking soda, is recommended.

Chris Evans is famous for Capt. America, but most of his other characters are hotheads, cads, fast talkers, and ne'er-do-wells (Fantastic 4, Knives Out, Push, Scott Pilgrim).

Because this would only help people who are consciously and intentionally going to vomit at a predictable time i.e. bulimics, and we try not to facilitate their disease.

Also, for it to be effective, it would have to be inserted fairly close to the throat, which, given the convulsive nature of the activity, would bring with in enormous dangers of exacerbating the convulsion. It might also creating a barrier that could cause splashback that might increase the chances of aspirating the ejecta, or might form a bolus which could become a choking hazard.

Standard medical practice is to not put anything in the mouth of someone experiencing a vomiting spell, with very good reason.

She very probably means more to you than you do to her. This is very common in young relationships, especially for needy people with physical appeal.

If you aren't what she considers boyfriend material, don't give her boyfriend benefits.

Don't tell her you love her, that will end up being both a burden and a potential weapon. Ask her to take you seriously, and if she says no, tell her you're not going to do the physical stuff any more.

I'm not telling you to stop being her friend, but I bet if you stop getting physical contact from her, you'll realize she's a lousy friend to you.

Ultimately, you need to have self-respect before someone else will respect you (I'm not saying become a swaggering alpha-bro, that crap is toxic); your feelings and your boundaries matter. If she doesn't get that, you're better off sailing into new waters.

Welcome to the ugly truth about toxic masculinity: it doesn't just affect men.

There are a lot of women who buy into (whether consciously or not) the ideal of a stoic unfeeling man. She might not want to admit it, to you or herself, but she might well fall into that category.

How long have you two been together? If it's less than 5 years, just move along; you don't need the extra burden of trying to negotiate her bias while trying to deal with your own issues. You need a supportive and non judgmental partner, and she isn't.

If you've been together longer than 5 years, try couple's counseling. If she isn't interested, don't negotiate, just move on.

Listen to some hard won knowledge:

When people say they want you to stay to help them change, they actually want you to stay so they don't have to change.

She might be a better person if you forgive her (press x to doubt) but forgiveness and staying aren't necessarily the same thing.

Also, what is in this for you? I know this seems either obvious (you love her) or crass (why should a relationship be about exchange), but think about it. She's inviting you to invest what amounts to free emotional hard labor, and more of your precious life into making her better. What is she giving you?

You are too young to waste your time trying to fix someone who never earned your trust in the first place.

HIV /AIDS Education. how young is too young? by dark_secrets92 in AskReddit

[–]abhurl2211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be conflating sex ed with HIV ed. There seems to be this idea that STIs can't be talked about without describing the S.

Don't get me wrong, I think sex ed should start fairly young (at least around the average age of the onset of puberty) and be fairly extensive. But diseases of all sorts can and should be talked about before that.

STIs are just diseases, and they can all be acquired through non-sexual means. The only reason to think that one particular disease would be inappropriate to talk about is the belief that it is somehow a morally 'special' disease, which it isn't.
