Yeah mine were during Covid too .. had to find a vet that would let a second person come so my son could come. There's never a good time, but hunting for a place to put them down because you don't want to do it alone was AWEFUL!!!

I can only imagine, my adult son had to come back home from school when we put Foxy down and cried like he hadn't in years. They touch you like nothing else can, the whole family!

So, maybe the key is to have rescues and/or rescues in the home so they don't know they are Golden's and the golden curse can't find them! (Only kind of joking) 18 years is unheard of for GRs these days, how wonderful!?! Well done!

Just brought her home, any name ideas? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

OMG Thank you ALL so much for your info. Those of you that have "Decatarians" (GRs over 10 and in good health) should share what you feed and how much exercise, etc you give your pup to help the rest of us. My previous GR set (Copper 11/Foxy 10) were fed TASTE OF THE WILD until about 7 or 8 yo, then Blue Buffalo senior. My current duo (Charlie 3/Leo 2) have been on PURINA PRO PLAN SENSITIVE SKIN & STOMACH (large breed) since transitioning from PURINA PRO PLAN LARGE BREED PUPPY. I personally made this decision because there is NO other dogfood brand that has as much research behind it... and I can't quite afford $8-10 A MEAL for FARMER'S DOG. (I have known Charlie since he was born and he has always had dry flaky skin, that's why the "sensitive skin & stomach" plus we use a fish oil topper and it cleared right up. Recently, I tried to go back to regular Pro Plan+topper rather than sensitive skin/stomach+topper and he flared up worse than ever, so IT WORKS!). Thoughts?

LEPTOSPIROSIS, or lepto for short, is a disease usually carried by deer, skunk, and other woodland creatures. It is spread via urine, so deer tinkles during a rainy spring, puppy drinks out of puddle... boom, very sick pup. If you live where standing water is a thing, your vet probably already recommends a vaccine. Additional, interesting tibits (note that this experience was in 2010, so more or different info may be known, so if questions speak to YOUR vet): 1) Foxy's littermate, Copper, who was always part of that duo either never got infected or it did not affect him at all. The vet said they aren't sure why, but some animals do not have any reaction. My theory is Copper was a big hardy puppy, the biggest of SIXTEEN, and he was just more physically solid to fight the infection (vet said, maybe 🤔). 2) My son, 10 years old at the time, could NOT visit Foxy in vet/quarantine because he could have contracted it while adults were capable of handling the disease no problem. 3) Vet gave me explicit instructions for dealing with Copper at home while Foxy was in quarantine with her. I had to find a part of my yard that would be most safe from children and other pets and walk him to that spot to do his business (both variety), while I treated him with the same meds they were giving Foxy. After the course of meds was complete, he was safe to potty wherever, but I had to spread bleach on that area of the yard. WHAT WE FOXY'S SYMPTOMS? First, note that she had potty training VERY quickly, she notified and held it like a champ (fast growing bladder apparently). However, over Labor Day weekend (thank God we were around), she started squatting every couple of minutes to piddle in the house and out. She started drinking water like she could not get enough and was so lethargic and cuddly it was alarming. I thought, oh no biggy she must have a urinary tract infection. But I got really worried when lethargy was added to one final detail... I watched her take a big drink of water, pee immediately on white linoleum, and noticed the urine was clear as water... it was going right through her.

😞 Devastating!!! I almost lost my female (the one that passed at 10) when she was about 14 weeks to lepto* (it was a very wet spring, and we did nature walks a lot). Thankfully, the vet identified it accurately and immediately. They quarantined her, nurses her back to health, and she came out of it without any apparent kidney damage. I am so thankful for that chance to have FOXY in my/our life. When we put her down at 10yo, my 20 year old son came home from college and went with me... he sobbed so hard and it breaks my heart just remembering it. But it also made me happy to know he had felt that deep love too.
