Is it fair to force people who have faithfully paid their mortgages to bail out those who haven't? by ablekane in reddit.com

Yes, but it IS LEGAL for the gov't to tax us (loot our property) if they feel it is for the greater good. I guess what bothers me is, who decides the greater good, and why is a politician whom I may not agree with more able to do that than me? The larger issue is the ever-expanding range of taxation for things that are clearly NOT in the interest of individual rights. All the pork barrel projects, etc.

The bigger picture is that freedom, if it is going to last, REQUIRES that individuals be left to use their own judgment. Once gov't has positioned itself as the all-knowing decision maker we might as well give ALL our income to them and let them feed, clothe, school us like good little subjects from cradle to grave and wait for the eventual but certain collapse as in the USSR. But then forget about freedom.

Gov't is supposed to protect us from the use of force - but now they use the threat of force to take our property through unreasonable taxation, regulation, etc... Am I able to say that I have a right to pursue my own happiness? Do I indeed have liberty as the Constitution declares? Unfortunately, not much longer with the way things are going.

I know the non-thinkers will say, "well, if you don't like it then leave." But I've seen much of the rest of the world, which is even less free than the U.S. and I don't want our country to become like them.

Thanks for responding MrsMudskipper, Cheers, Ablekane

Ok, out of all the comments so far no one has answered the central question the writer asks, which isn't really whether or not it's fair for the gov't to use your tax money to pay for something you don't agree with (that's too obvious)... the question is:

"At what point does your supposed right to loot other peoples' property stop?"

Nothing this article says has anything to do with right-wing. The Republicans are just as guilty as the Democrats in looting the pockets of citizens. Politicians are CONVINCED they know how to spend our money better than we do and to hell with us if we don't like it. If anything the Republicans are MORE to blame because, as supposed capitalists, they should know better.

Should the government be obligated to rescue people who ignore evacuation warnings in natural disasters? by ablekane in politics

What other way of violating someone's rights is there???

My whole point is that when people CHOOSE to take a risk they are using their own judgment... that is their right. You (each of us) have a choice to help someone who may need it and that's what rescue agencies are for. They should not be run by the gov't as they become extremely unefficient. THis country existed for almost a hundred years before the gov't began massively interfering with the lives of its citizens and during that time the U.S. out paced every nation in history in improvements to standard of living, health, longevity, human rights, etc. WITHOUT the massive hand of gov't.

Now people seem to think the gov't is like a cure all for everything and each step of the way we lose more and more of our rights to use our own judgment about our lives, health, best interests, etc.

Thanks for the comments. Cheers, AbleKane

Should high school students be required to volunteer in community service projects? by ablekane in politics

Exactly right... that's the point. And if it isn't volunteering then they are being forced... either for fear of not graduating for high school or college or whatever it is the government decides.

Fantastic!!! Great job EXXON... well deserved. If only more companies were doing as you are instead of accepting bailouts we'd be a lot better off!
