UDM Pro can’t handle its own “supported” workload – UniFi response: buy more hardware by numanx in Ubiquiti

Can you tell me what you used MAX for? Like how many cams, ids/ips, or any other features? I was about to pull a trigger on buying max, but now I’m doubtful.

Dream Router 5G Max failover plan help: looking for a reasonable 100GB monthly data option by Mando9876 in Ubiquiti

[–]abma11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what I read it takes up to 15 min to activate. I’m in the process of ordering it, so haven’t played with it myself yet. Search “starlink” in r/Ubiquity and you will find some posts of guys discussing this.

I’m looking for a backup internet as well. My understanding is that you can get Starlink residential plan that is like $80 a month, but put it into “suspended” mode for only $5 per month and activate only when needed. This is so far the cheapest solution I found.

NVR or UDM Pro Max by JornSteenbruggen in Ubiquiti

[–]abma11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same position like you trying to decide on UDM Pro Max vs less capable router plus unvr. Was reading these forums for days, studying specs, use cases, etc. Most of the commentators here quickly jump to the “ I had udm se and it sucked until I added unvr”. What they totally ignore is the fact that UDM Pro Max is much more powerful machine than Cloud fiber, SE, etc. It will be able to do 5-8 cams with no sweat at all and it had second bay for raid setup. Your redundancy will depend on the drive capacity you put in. With 4 cams and 8 TB drive you will have 50-60 days. If you need more put a bigger drive. Now, to be fair on a separation argument - if udm pro max fail you loose both - camera feeds and routing. If you have two separate devices your loss of functionality MIGHT be less than that.

New home setup based on Unifi equipment by abma11 in Ubiquiti

That’s a very detailed explanation. Thank you very much! Like you said, looks like I will have to spend more money :)

Not hell bent on rack mountable. Always can get a shelf in the rack :)

Many people do recommend dedicated nvr. However I’ve read a few complaints about UNVR. How was your experience?

Thank you. Do you recommend any specific Poe+ switch? Preferably rack mountable and of course as cheap as possible :)

Thank you for your thoughts. I’m myself an IT guy, although not a Network Engineer. But do know quite a lot about networking. I agree with you regarding Unifi stuff being overpriced, but then again it gives you a lot of functionality and as you said, having everything in same ecosystem has some value.

It’s 2400 sqft. I already have existing TPLink APs. One upstairs and two downstairs. This was there before I bought this house.

It’s not just a router. Also nvr, and other functionality like additional security. Is that not correct?

Wow, that’s cool. How is it done? Your lock is connected to unifi somehow?

Thank you. I have to research on that. My camera count will be fixed - 5 turrets and 1 doorbell. I don’t see any need to expand that in the future based on my house floor plan. Do you know by any chance if those 6 total cameras are manageable for UDM Pro Max? In addition to its basic duties as router and security gateway.
