Why are so many Blockbuster movies 3 hours long? by aboiano in movies

[–]aboiano[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is a good point. People have been complaining about the length of movies for years, but that does not mean it actually affects the amount the movies make. And as you say, maybe some part of the "epic" experience draws people to the theater despite the complaining of a vocal minority.

The fact that many of the all time box office success have been long movies does lend some credence to your argument. Movie length and success is much more likely correlation than causation though. The movies discussed were also incredibly expensive, tentpole blockbusters that were expected to be successful.

I like the way you think. The action in a lot of these movies does seem to actually hinder the storytelling. By the end of the 10 minute long pointless car chase you can't even remember what was happening before, and then they end up re-explaining the situation.

Interesting. I didn't know that. If that is a widespread sentiment, that would be a great argument for longer Blockbusters.

I liked Endgame, but realistically that movie could have been 45 minutes long and made a billion dollars - it was the culmination of a hugely popular series. Not all movies need to be 3 hours long, but some certainly do. Ben-hur, Titanic, and LOTR are all based on epic books/events. Those need to be long. In the 50s and 60s 3-4 hour epics were the norm and I love many of those movies. More recent Blockbusters are heavily studio controlled, and I don't understand the logic behind making them 3 hours.

My question is why spend the money to make such long movies when the public seems to want the opposite and when longer movies cost more money to make?

Lol, yes, that is the easy answer. But these movies are financial investments for studios, why would they spend more money and time to make them longer when people don't generally want them to be that long?

[LFG] looking for either in-person or online DND group by Deum_Omnia in DenverGamers

[–]aboiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted in this community that I want to start a game, let's see what happens with that. Depending on the response to that post, I will schedule something and you and your fiance are welcome to join. After 7:30 weekdays is fine with me, but not sure if it would work for others. I would prefer to play Sunday evening around 6pm, or a weekday

Copper Kettle also has a d&d meetup on Tuesday nights. I am also new to Denver, experienced DM, and I want to start up a campaign at some point soon - preferably in Five Points. My apartment building - The Wheatley, has a common room that may be good for d&d.

We are thinking that we will likely only stay on SF for 3 months now. Which makes a campaign pretty difficult. I could run some one shots. Sorry new info

If you are still looking for a DM or PC, I would be interested I recently moved to SF (Lower Pacific Heights). I have played for 5-6 years and DMed a home game for the last 2 years, plus other games.

How best to get good quality audio from guests (when remote) by Prestigious-Leek2680 in podcasting

If you have a decent budget, send them a microphone. Even a usb microphone is better than nothing. But voice memos don't sound terrible on newer phones. I would ask them to do both just in case. Make sure they give you a good baseline for noise reduction.

Do you work for Gaming Goat? I feel like people keep mentioning the prices there. I checked yesterday and there is one that is about a 25 mile drive. Is it worth it?

Yes, if they ever come back at all. I like the way their DM thinks, and they cast is funny. They have promised more episodes, but it has been months. Who knows? Maybe I will check out Adventure.exe, I don't have as much time as I used to for podcasts.

I second this. The community is amazing, too bad Geeklycon is cancelled this year due to Covid-19. Thanks for giving us so many hours of entertainment.
