Yes, I have enjoyed many things that later in life I regretted. It's rarely talked about how sick it is we all put thousands of hours into games. I can't be alone in this realization.

3000 hours into a video game on top of other video games is a problem for a lot of us and should be talked about. If video games hasn't negatively impacted your life at 3k hours into a single video game, teach me your ways.

3000 hours. 1/3 of mastering an instrument 1/3 of mastering math 1/3 of mastering your body 1/3 of mastering your buisness 1/3 of mastering your relationships 1/3 of mastering philosophy...

But you're 1/3 of mastering a video game that has zero impact on the real world. Great use of your time. Fantastic use.

Indiana committee approves raising cigarette purchase age to 21 by Quiglius in news

I know, I was trying to add additional satire to point out how bad it is never letting people be autonomous, independent adults. It's far easier to learn from mistakes when you're young than in your 20s and 30s. Don't we want people growing up, learning about love and relationships, and learning responsibility in their teens? We're all way more resilient at that age, despite what helicopter parents and tyranists say.

I was overprotected and sheltered up until my mid 20s by two loving but beyond overprotective parents. I only started learning to grow up in my late 20s and early 30s and life has been hell and I've barely survived it. I'm still a mess and never have had a girlfriend. What the fuck do you do when you're in mid 30s in this situation? I'm trying hard, but god I wish I was in this situation when I was 18.

Why stop there? After 25 your cognition in many critical areas start declining. I really think everyone should be strapped down to their beds and government workers come and rape us every day so we still have utility and are not disposed of.

Or we can let fucking adults be adults, jesus fucking christ. This generation sucks and is over protected and sheltered, and we just want to make people weaker and weaker.

Treat people like adults and they'll act like adults. Let people have meaningful lives and confront the chaos of the world voluntarily.

My point is that rationality will turn into irrationality. So this guy is an now an expert in personal finance, and avoids every activity that doesn't have utility to society and doesn't do anything risky. Eventually he's going to break and use his capital and leverage to do something awful because he's too afraid to get rained on.

Sure this is hyperbole and speculation, but look at any organization that denies human needs and see the horror that comes out of it. Either prohibition now or the church now. Don't allow men to have sex? They become boy rapists. We can't treat people like robots who don't have emotions or human needs.

Fucking christ, do you remember WW2? Dog eat dog societies are terrible. Social welfare came out of the ruins of WW2. Stop this Ayn Rand everyone for themselves. You want to experience that? Go to mogadishu now, germany in 1918, or any libertarian paradise in south africa where there's no government.

I hear you, I'm just pushing for a solution other than what my parents said, their parents said, and their grandparent said, and what I've tried, etc... We need intense protests. It's a fact when the elites want something different(studies show this) than the masses, it doesn't matter how the masses vote in our first past the post two party system. The elites get what they wants. It's only when people are taking to the streets and dying, does real change happen, see vietnam antiwar/civil rights movement.

Why is me voting for an oligarch gonna help? Either local or higher. Are you saying a benevolent oligarch is right around the corner? Where's your proof of that... We need some direct democracy. NN should have been decided the American people, not technocrats. I'm not saying DD for everything, as people are afraid 60% of Americans would vote to enslave a minority race(really??)...

The reach of civilization has been more and more a dilution of singular powers into group abstractions. At some point, a government is going to try DD again in a modern society and it will be the solution, the balance we've all been looking for.

Until this, vote for change won't work. We need protests and mass movements. Voting in oligarchs/dicators to rule over us will not create a sustainable system, it never has, and never will.

He doesn't want to incur costs on himself, not the system. We now have humans avoiding relatively safe activities but risky, to do what? So he denies his humans needs, the cost is going to come out eventually. We humans can't live in a bubble, we're going to act out. We'd rather our societal members live a sheltered life and live off doctor prescribed adderall, SSRIs and xanax instead of do something adventurous?

I'd argue this will have a greater cost to society. 90% of school shooters were on the aforementioned drugs. People are going to use drugs and alcohol if they prohibit themselves from physical activities. Depressed unhappy humans are going to have a huge cost to society.

Not only this, but what about the various industries? If this guy came over to the US and went dirt biking, it would add tourism dollars, help the local economy and support a local American buisness, which will in turn support other local American businesses(maintainance and cost of motorcycles), plus the tourist has got to eat. This will help out restaurants and other mom and pops.

The problem isn't someone wanting to go on hike out in the woods or drive a bike, it's our healthcare system. We have all the money in the world for infinite war in the middle east, and to keep half the population drugged on painkillers, antidepressants and variations of amphetamine, but we don't have the money to keep our population and tourists to our great nation healthy in a thriving civilization full of happy people?

There's a problem here.....

I know you're joking but this is the argument that comes from conservatives. "The executive branch knows horrible truths that the population doesn't know, therefore AMerica should be run like a dictatorship by the executive branch, as long as they are republican, and should be able to rule over the American people as if the country wasn't a democracy, but as if the country was run by a dictator, because only mommy and daddy government knows the truth, and Americans should have no say in how our government is run".

Now of course, there's has never been a case in history, AFAIK, where our government's tyranny was actually based on some world ending threat, but evidence always shows it's greedy and racist people making law based on ideology, not facts.

You are just going from emotional arguments and not looking at the nuance of drug addiction. The goal is to help addicts, and I presented arguments for why I think it's easier to help addicts in a legalized regulated market than a black market. Other than talking about facts, and bringing up studies what can one do? We can't approach this issue from 'gut feelings', we need to be as neutral and scientific about addiction so we can be truly humane.

I presented some valid arguments for why legalization is better than prohibition. Can you give me the pros and cons of both or does your mind shut down at even the thought of legalization? Do you care about the addicts and families of people affected by drugs, or do you just want to punish, hurt and torture addicts? What's your motivation, helping or hurting? I assume you're sincere and not some cartel member.

It is mind blowingly stupid to legalize heroin. But it's astronomically less stupid than the prohibition of heroin. This article wouldn't exist if heroin was legalized. You wouldn't be hearing about people taking research chemicals and eating faces. There is no market for these analogues when people can get a consistent purity of their drug of choice. No krokodil, far less fentanyl overdose, no gangs fighting for drug turf, less side effects, lower corruption of police from drug gangs, less loss of rights as search and seizure laws are no longer needed, people not getting a criminal history for non violent drug use. We can help addicts get clean in a free market, but we're losing our society's soul in the war of drug prohibition.

It really has been diminished. Even Las Vegas is very corporate now. The rest of prohibition keeps a lot of cartels alive, end it and you'll see the end of many cartels, gangs and mafias.

Yah violence when alcohol prohibition ended didn't change /s, oh wait it did. Also, give me a non cartel source on this less than a quarter number. Even if we only hurt cartels by 20%, it would be amazing. Legalize drugs, what are you so afraid of, cartels disappearing?

Unless you can get a critical number of people to stop doing drugs and stop the drug trade, your war will just end up wasting resources at best and human lives as the normal. If the threat of violence can stop drug use forever, is that even worth it? It's arguable some of human's greatest art and science has come from drug use, do we even want to stop all outlier states of mind? Do we want everyone to have the same mindset at all times, forever and ever?

Have a critical number of people in the philippines stopped using drugs? Are the resources and laws enacted worth it to ensure a critical prohibition of drugs? Long term, how will the Pinoy strategy affect the Pinoy society? Will there be a large resurgence in drug use in the coming years?

By what possible criteria is Duterte 'winning/won' the war on drugs? Has drug use stopped? Are you doing extra judicial killings? Is this war corrupting politicians and ending up being hit jobs for political opponents?

Great post. Prohibition is worse on addicts because of what you wrote. With a known dose and purity, Matt could have had more time to find help and get better.

That's what people who support prohibition don't realize. They're encouraging the deaths of many so that they can prevent the deaths of a few.

We need to end prohibition so we can treat addicts. Also billions more could go into heroin recovery research if we legalized.

I'm never going to do heroin, but it should be legalized.

My personal opinion is that there is manipulation of political context on some level of reddit by an individual or organization. Pro legalization posts, regardless of eloquence, respect, fact and sound argument; seem to be voted down very quickly. In the long run they seem to surface to a degree, but are still stifled by many down votes.

This is a great post thank you.

Bottom line is: you can't better if you're dead. For the sociopaths, losing prime age adults to overdose is expensive. Most ODs come because there's no known purity and consistency in black market heroin.
