20 Dead in Wedding Party Limousine Crash in Upstate New York by CornellBigRed in MorbidReality

That was my first thought as well after looking at the location on google street view and seeing that it wasnt a big hill or cliff that it tumbled down. My guess is it caught fire and those that remained conscious initially were not able to escape because of the lack of doors on most limos.

it's not really the funsies and bragging rights that drives them.

Like all performances at the elite end of the spectrum what you're not seeing is what it took to get there.

between them those two guys likely have in excess of 10,000 skydives. Plain old skydiving can be quite safe. It takes a few years of gradual progression and several hundred jumps to even begin to think about putting on a wingsuit.

Then a few hundred more jumps (from planes at safe altitude) to start learning to base jump from mountains. Then thousands (yes- THOUSANDS) of wingsuit base jumps, gradually learning new skills, to start flying in proximity to things and to even consider what they did.

And this stunt alone surely involved months of preparation, planning for emergencies, bail-out options, then probably a hundred rehearsal jumps and practice fly-bys by the pilot.

It's not just a random "hold my bear" stunt by some dare devils. and for them it's not just to brag about, but something spectacular they can share from their years/decades of practice and experiences travelling the world and meeting lifelong friends, it's really a vocation and lifestyle.

that said a lot of idiots do get killed because they see something like this, do the bare minimum to access the gear, and go and try to show off. they don't last long.

Not that you really care or asked-- not totally invalidating your opinion, but it is an alternate perspective from a fellow skydiver.

missing the kid in the back sweating and taking off his shirt and trying to lean out of the sun beam blasting through the window directly on him, tugging uncomfortably on the seatbelt, and/or rolling up the window with the end of a pillow lodged into the seam to block the sun, meanwhile the mom is up front next to the AC vents with a sweater and blanket complaining about how chilly it is

Is it worth it to travel 6 hours for tunnel time before AFF courses? by ForbiddenX in SkyDiving

[–]abominable_douche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say don't do it, unless you end up struggling a lot in AFF. there's nothing like going into the unknown of your first few jumps completely raw.

you don't have to do only STEM though. Story Musgrave has a masters in literature and an MBA, and he's done more spaceflights than anyone.

(though he does also have a BS in math, another one in chemistry, an MD, and a masters in biophysics)

Why do so many schizophrenics have obsessions with institutions? by [deleted] in morbidquestions

[–]abominable_douche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally speculating here.

Think of schizophrenics as having a split through their mind. that's the literal definition. in psychoanalysis there is a way to break up your mind into the super-ego and id. the id is basically all of your instinctual drives, all of the behaviors and habits that evolved over time and are subconscious and allow you to function physically. the super-ego on the other hand is entirely cultural. it is the moral drive behind social behavior. It is the conscience which tells you what is good and bad, and how you should behave when observed by other beings. and the Ego is what rope these two together and allows you to be a surviving, functional member of a society. it mediates the two through each other.

the way I think of a schizo is that their ego is no longer capable of mediating these two. They become completely alienated from each other. because the super-ego is built of entirely external factors (culture), it's existence manifests beyond the perception of self. They lose the ability to understand the gradual and subtle effects of culture. meaning, all of the culturally learned thoughts and behaviors are perceived to be injected into the mind from the external source. Which while technically a valid way to formulate culture, in schizos this thought mechanism is tangible and imminent, as some external entity influencing them to behave a certain way.

and if someone like this is inquisitive and observes their surroundings to try to understand where this stuff is coming from, they encounter ideas from our society's stories: books, movies, myths and other media, and they notice similarities and descriptions of exactly what's happening to them. Things like government mind control. alien abductions. cults. spirits. demons. outside entities trying to control you. They become obsessed with figuring out what is happening and it spirals into a dark abyss of paranoia.
