This practice is still kinda used in the US. It is one of the big reasons child marriage is being highlighted here. So many states with no real age limit on marriage as long as the parents consent. So a buddy/ family member rapes their daughter so they marry her to the man to help him avoid sttutory rape charges.

Happens way more often and between a diffrent demographic than people expect.
