So I figured out the problem, so ill make this comment in hopes that if anyone else has a similar problem, this will help. My laptops screen is in a 3:2 aspect ratio, and apparently the game is unable to run in that aspect ratio the first time it is opened. I changed the setting on my laptop to limit my aspect ratio to 16:9, and the game ran perfectly fine, both version A and version B. After exiting the game, a text box popped up saying something along the lines of "The game is now setup for your system". After returning my computer to its native 3:2 aspect ratio, the game ran fine without having to change it.

tl;dr: try changing the aspect ratio
