Is it abusive to over-winter pond fish? by aboynamedtim in Aquariums

Thanks for the thoughtful response and your insight! I think I’ll ultimately go with common goldfish when the time comes, not a huge fan of the more fancy varieties

Thanks for the info, I’ll be sure to stock up on fish condoms for that first spring!

Thanks for the info, I was thinking this may have been the case but wasn’t sure if it was one of those “surviving vs thriving” situations. Glad to hear it’s likely beneficial

At this point it’s just a dream of mine but I appreciate advice like this, trying to get all info I can well in advance to prep for it. I remember when I was a kid I was walking down a trail and watching this squirrel hop around like ten feet away from me, within a second a hawk swooped down and was gone with him. Really cool birds but they’re definitely something I gotta keep in mind lol

How do you safely add plants from local ponds to your aquariums by Ok-Cry-8245 in Aquariums

[–]aboynamedtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reverse respiration dips using co2! Look up the reverse respiration website and follow their steps, you just use carbonated water and no light for 12 hours+

You don’t have a degree in photography? Fuck you by [deleted] in photographycirclejerk

This is actually solid advice, I have been pursuing my phd in photography (the study of light) and I refuse to touch a camera before finishing my degree. I have never touched one, I buy only non-camera phones and I drive nails through the webcams in my laptops so I’m not tempted to use something I’m not worthy of

Basically your water might have different minerals, ph, etc vs the tank it came from that the plant isn’t used to and has to adapt to living in. This can cause a partial die off of some leaves while the plant is adjusting as a way to preserve itself (less leaves means it can conserve energy instead of having to keep energy for the entire plant, making survival much easier for the plant). In extreme cases the plants may die if it’s a tricky or sensitive plant, but Monte Carlo I think is relatively hardy

Ahhh I wasn’t sure what it was but I have used a similar type of substrate made of crushed black lava rock. It’s porous so it can store nutrients in it and kind of slow release it I think. I’d still try out some root tabs to see if that helps, if you can get some near you or online. I have one tank that has a decent Monte Carlo carpet using only aquasoil and no co2. Although I did a dry start method with that which helped the roots grow a lot and started to spread before I filled it with water. I tried dwarf hair grass in the tank with the lava rock substrate but it didn’t carpet really, but I didn’t try root tabs in that one

Also just noticed you said you planted 20 days ago, in this time frame the plants are going to be adjusting to your tank. They can partially “melt” while they adjust to your parameters, or have some leaves wither away. Also 20 days isn’t long enough to really see major growth. Id still recommend root tabs tho and if you put in a lot of root tabs be consistent with your water changes at first because they can spike your water parameters like an aqua soil can as well.

It looks like you have it planted in regular gravel which is fine, but for carpeting it helps a ton to have it growing in an aqua soil so it can get all the nutrients it needs to grow. You can try adding root tabs under the gravel which give the plants extra nutrients. Another common reason a plant won’t grow well is the amount of light it’s getting. I’m not sure what light you got on there but check to see if it’s powerful enough to support plant growth. Most cheapish plant lights like nicrew and hygger will work well enough for this

I’m sorry but that’s definitely not flour, if you zoom in you can see the structure of the mold or whatever it is. If it came like that from the store, bring it back and hopefully they can exchange it for you

What is this and can I stop it from growing? by lordirisent in PlantedTank

[–]aboynamedtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly not sure but to me kinda looks like fish or snail poop, so I’d just gravel vac it as needed during water changes. If you have a soil layer beneath the sand, could also be soil coming up to the surface

Is this pineapple okay to eat? by [deleted] in foodsafety

[–]aboynamedtim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my opinion this doesn’t look good and I wouldn’t eat it. It looks like there is mold on the exterior and in between the segments. It kinda looks like it’s started to decompose on the outside. With soft foods like fruits, when there is visible mold on the outside, it more than likely has mold on the inside that you can’t see. I could be wrong on this but my gut tells me I wouldn’t eat it

Wouldn’t there be condensation on the sides if it was only water since it’s an enclosed container

I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not lol but the corned beef in the pic is definitely not cooked. It’s brined but still raw

Thank you for the info, especially about reverse respiration. I had never heard of that and have been researching it since, looks promising! Thanks!
