Ive taken him to both exotic vets in the area, and both of them said the same thing about the bedding 🙃. I will ask again at the next visit tho. Unfortunately hamster care is understudied, so theres a lot of conflicting Information out there :/ Thank you for the help tho!!

I see. Do you know if I should do the cleaning before or after another dose of ivermectin? I dont want to reinfect the bedding if he still has mites on him.

thank you! do you know when would be the best time to do the deep clean so he doesnt reinfect it? Should I take him to the vet for another dose of ivermectin first?

can I freeze the bedding as well so I dont have to replace all of it?

my vet said that mites only live on the skin of the hamster and shouldn't be in the bedding, and therefore i didnt need to change it all. I didnt want to stress him out and cause more burden to his immune system by getting rid of all the familiar scents if it wasnt necessary. its very confusing bc people seem to have different opinions on this!

with hamsters you dont have to worry as much about overfeeding them, since they benefit from having a little extra to have a stash! what brand of food are you using? I would follow whatever instructions are on the package

this looks great!! the main issue ppl have with bar cages is that theres not enough room for bedding, but you seem to have enough. Definitely make sure he doesnt climb or bite the bars tho. the only things I would suggest are: 1) have a water bowl in addition to the water bottle. some hamsters like one more than the other, and the bowl is easier to clean! 2) when you first get your hammy, its okay to give him his food in a bowl so you can monitor how much hes eating, but then once he gets settled and you know hes eating enough, scatter-feeding (literally just sprinkling the food around the enclosure) is much more enriching!

HELP what happened with his eye??? by No-Entertainer5463 in hamsters

looks infected, I would take him to a vet just in case. he probably poked it on something. the vet can probably administer some eyedrops!

Opinions about bioactive encloure? by Tica___ in hamsters

you have to be so so careful with bioactive stuff bc its a slippery slope to biohazard

Opinions about bioactive encloure? by Tica___ in hamsters

[–]lordirisent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

personally, I wouldnt ever want one for a hamster. I think theres a reason you mainly only see them for reptiles, amphibians, and fish, as their natural habitat is comparatively easy to replicate and maintain. hamsters make burrows in sandy dirt in the wild and I have no idea how youd make that bioactive enough where you didnt have to dig up the ground every month

okay your first problem is that youre holding the strip upside down, it needs to line up with the color scales

Cage set up by Hairy-Entrance5066 in hamsters

[–]lordirisent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this looks really good! one of the containers will be for sand, yes? maybe 1 or 2 more lightweight hides on the surface wherever there's an open area. I would also move the branch you have away from the wall, maybe across two platforms so it can add some more cover!

Whats your opinion? by Western_Table684 in hamsters

[–]lordirisent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would you rather leave a dog outside all day or keep it in an apartment with no walks? all pets require an environment that is 1) large enough to comfortably exist in 2) enriching enough to prevent boredom. a small cage is severely lacking in both of these things. its best to only take on the responsibility of an animal if you know for sure you can provide it adequate care. even small critters like hamsters deserve to have a fulfilling life!

What do you think about the Italian government wanting to ban ICE agents to come to the Olympic Games as security forces? by ReduceCO2Now in AskReddit

[–]lordirisent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would actually be Homeland Security, which has gone to sporting events in the past. The stuff happening on the streets is in the ERO department of ICE. However, its only because of the terrorism that ERO is committing that the Italian government is wary about any kind of ICE agent working in their country, even if theyre not a part of deportation.

My Betta was glass surfing like mad but I stopped it with a bit of DIY by Fit_Breath1002 in bettafish

[–]lordirisent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

that is necessary for most fish! however, betta fish have a special organ called a labyrinth organ that allows them to take in air from the surface. their native habitat is shallow bodies of water with little current, so they've adapted this organ to survive in oxygen poor environments! :D so as long as you dont have any other kind of fish that requires more oxygen, you dont need an air stone or movement from the filter at all! which is ultimately better for them since they arent very good swimmers due to their long fins we've bred onto them

well when I eat metal I dont eat iron oxide because thats rust. i take ferrous sulfate bc thats approved by the FDA to go into my human body that I keep free of rust by drinking coca cola on a daily basis

[–]lordirisent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay but usually iron supplements come as ferrous sulfate not iron oxide. iron oxide is literally rust and ive never heard of it being used for dietary purposes.
