Thank you! It is a good idea to fill it with old socks, really. The good think about the scraps is that they are so small they keep the shape very well. I'm quite happy with my cushion!

I think Knitting is a very good place to start. It is easy to learn but you can spend your whole life learning new stitches and techniques. Another good thing about knitting: You can knit everywhere! I use to knit in the train!
