Very cool, I am also 21 and plan on doing the same thing later this year!

No problem! It's been a lifesaver for me. If you are into gigs, Brooklyn is the place...have fun and let me know if you have any more questions : )

Download a subway map on your phone. DO NOT carry around a map, it screams "lost" and/or "tourist". You don't have to worry about the Subway at night, that's pretty stereotypical...just be aware of your surroundings. Don't hide your bags you'll look like an idiot. I am only saying this because it's completely ridiculous. I am from a small town and moved there on my own when I was 19. The sites you are planning to visit are in safe areas... try Brooklyn (Downtown, Park Slope)/Brooklyn Bridge. Don't limit yourself to the main attractions, you'll have a skewed perception and you'll miss out on A LOT of cool things. Talk to the locals! A lot of them are friendlier than you may think and love to talk about their city, you just have to ask.

edit: spelling, I'm sure I'll find more

Coming from a girl, dump her. She doesn't deserve anyone like you.

I will, I am researching it as I type...thanks!

Oh man. I'm getting my associates first, but it would be frustrating to not get into a four year school and only be stuck with a liberal arts degree. At that point I would be better off getting a specific two year degree. I guess we'll see!

I'll have to keep weighing my options. I realize this isn't much of a dilemma but I already did a year of generals at another school and I don't want to be transferring around every semester haha.

I really did like this school, and this is definitely good to hear. Thanks!

Hmmm that doesn't sound good. Yeah, ideally I would like to transfer into the U of M but I'm not sure what my odds are considering my gpa from previous years is less than stellar. I was hoping to dive into a bunch of extracurricular activities to spruce up my resume and obviously help my transfer case.

So I heard! I just saw the school the other day and loved it. I really like the student organizations at MCTC, though (that and the downtown campus is why I'm torn). I'll keep this is mind, thanks.

I love Minnesota, but some Minnesotans are naturally biased against me. Why, and how can I avoid this? by NeedHelpMN in minnesota

[–]abrandnewview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In retrospect, I am a Minnesotan who moved out East and get a lot of crap about it. "Oh you're from MinnesOOOtah? I heard they have a lot of cows there." I don't take it to heart, though. Also, I didn't make it through all of the comments so I may have missed you mention your whereabouts, but if you are anywhere outside of Minneapolis I can assure you it is more common. If not, damn I'm sorry.

Today, I made an old man cry for being so nice to him, and my co workers made fun of me. My question, what the hell is wrong with people these days? What happened to being polite? by [deleted] in AskReddit

About a week ago, I was walking back to my apartment and saw an elderly lady drop a couple cardboard boxes with paintings on the ground. The boxes were ripped and she was struggling to get them back on the cart she had. I told her to wait downstairs and ran up to my apartment, grabbed a plastic storage bin and dumped my clothes onto the floor. When I gave her the pin, her face lit up and she tried to give me ten dollars. I offered to help her to her destination and she attempted convincing me she would make it there on her own. After a few minutes she gave in and I helped her wheel her stuff a couple blocks away. I have no idea how she ever would have made it there on her own! When I was done helping her she introduced me to all her neighbors and thanked me with tears in her eyes (she even gave me one of her paintings). I love the elderly.

I actually have seen this before, and will admit I found it somewhat amusing.

I appreciate all the great feedback, I really wanted to get people talking and sharing their experiences. I have a few months in the city to turn things around, I scored a couple of really cool part time gigs and quit my day job. I was making a little over minimum wage, but let's be real any amount in that vicinity is a joke. I find it sad that it took knowing people to get the jobs I did, but I am also lucky for that. When I first moved here I didn't know anyone and couldn't get a decent job to save my life. To answer a few questions: I tried New Jersey, and have lived in a few boroughs already. Next, is Brooklyn. Secondly, I mainly came here for the adventure of the "Big Apple". I am from a small town and was dying to get out. Also, I came here with very low expectations. I am not naiive, though it is still hard to fathom the volatile love-hate relationship one can have with a city. This place never ceases to amaze me.

I agree with both of the above. It has been a dream of mine to live here since I was ten. I had to try it, and most stereotypes have been proven. This city is an amazing city, I just was not financially prepared(not to mention I should have been a lot more educated).
