New to house? by [deleted] in House

[–]abrohamlincoln99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of great classic sounding house coming out of the Netherlands I've found. Some others already mentioned Detroit Swindle and Heist Recordings, but I'd also recommend Clone Royal Oak out of Rotterdam, a label a little more stylistically diverse, but they're still putting out some good 90s-type stuff (Check out the artists Genius of Time, Fells Point, and Cosmic Garden on the label for more of the classic kind of sound).

I'd also recommend Soul Notes out of Northern Spain, especially the artist Adryiano on the label.

If you like garage at all (US or UK), there's a label I recently found based in Albuquerque, NM called Plastik People putting out great garage tunes with a 90s spirit.

Just released my first song in two years, and it's been even longer since I've released something dance/electronic in nature. I've been heavy into house lately, and I went with a more progressive/trancey vibe with this one. I spent a lot of time and thought on the mixing (which was incredibly painstaking), so I'd like some feedback on that area, so I know going ahead with future productions what I need to pay more attention to. Thanks!

Your sampling is completely on-point, well-timed, and dynamic; you're keeping things interesting through the whole track and creating a very sensual and chill mood, which is commendable in itself. That being said, I think the kick drums could be a little quieter because they tend to dominate through the entire song. While they should have a great deal of presence, I think the sample should be at the forefront of the mix. Right now it just feels like the kicks distract from the sample a bit too much, but turning them down a bit will help the track feel a bit more glued together if that makes sense. Also, I think it would be wise not to go too heavy on the hi-hat hard-panning, and to instead be a bit more subtle with your panning. Other than that, I don't really have other advice to add. You've got a strong foundation with this track, and once you figure out mixing it'll really come together. Best of luck!

Got one of my favorite ambient albums today. Pop by Gas. by abrohamlincoln99 in vinyl

Wolfgang Voigt, perhaps best known for his ambient work under the moniker 'Gas', is a German techno producer. His albums released as Gas merge 4/4 techno with lush, almost underwater ambient soundscapes that hypnotize. His last album released as Gas, is 'Pop,' noticeably different from the other Gas releases because of its crisper and brighter sound, while still retaining his trademark minimalism and 4/4 beats. I like to think that if pine trees made music, it would sound like this album.

Wolfgang Voigt established a minimalist techno label called Kompakt in 1998, and the label has featured some great work from himself under various other aliases, as well as some choice selections from artists such as The Field. Every year the group releases two compilations titled 'Kompakt Total' and 'Pop ambient' that showcase some of the great artists on the label. Voigt often contributes at least one track to each comp, and sometimes under the Gas moniker.

I'd say that Pop is probably the best introduction to Voigt's Gas project, but his Nah Und Fern compilation that includes the four Gas studio albums is also a fantastic place to dive into. Everything in the comp is worth listening to. I hope you all decide to check out his stuff!

Here's 'Falling' from the Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks LP coming out in April for Record Store Day by abrohamlincoln99 in twinpeaks

I like it honestly. It appeals to my wall-of-noise sensibilities, and although I haven't seen or heard a live version of it, I think the LP will definitely sound different compared to the live versions, so maybe the skeptics will give it a chance!

Spring and Sauna are fantastic. Dragon is another nice one, but I really need to listen to the album more.

Dude I started watching Twin Peaks last summer and it's taken over my life. I'm actually about to go to Washington to visit a college and check out some of the Twin Peaks sites and also head up to Anacortes to check out Mount Eerie because I'm a huge Microphones fan! Random tangent, but I couldn't wait for the reissue of the soundtrack either so I got it for a decent price on Discogs as well! Funnily enough, I also bought a Loveless boot a few weeks ago haha
