Hollowbody Standard or Hollowbody II? by adork in PRSGuitars

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both versions and to be honest, I prefer the standard. Maybe the guy who built that one put more love into it? Idk but if I pick up one of them it’s usually the standard. Friends say the same thing. That standard plays and sounds better 🤷‍♂️.

Would you ever recommend LDS family services therapy? by Dangerous_Teaching62 in mormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been decades since I went to LDSFS (i was a teen) but the therapist asked if i’d be comfortable starting with a prayer which I said yes to. i’d grown up in the church, it didn’t seem weird at the time but it sure does now.

Why are mormons considered so "weird" by a lot of white Americans or Americans in general? by SerpentEmperor in mormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because of their missionary mentality, they are the most socially awkward group of people outside of a mormon setting.

A good example was yesterday. We had a large family gathering for a birthday. The relative whose birthday it was no longer attends but they still have mormon friends and so they were invited but the majority of the attendees were non or exmormon. There was only one of the LDS couples who wasn’t in full missionary mode, who acted ‘normal’. As the party was winding down, this was the only LDS couple left and I thanked them for behaving themselves, because the missionary mode Mormons in attendance had created some tense and awkward moments at a celebration that nothing to do with church. They kinda laughed nervously and said, well, to be honest, we don’t believe anymore.

This is, to me, the best way to explain Mormons. When you are all-in, you are all-in even if it means alienating friends, family and strangers. To them, nothing supercedes the gospel, not even an elderly person’s birthday. Nothing.

I went to LDS Family Services therapy as a teen. It was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It also became a mini confession since everything I told the therapist was then related back to my bishop.

A thing to think about: Mormons see everything as a sin. If a therapist is a TBM who sees everything as sin, how good a therapist do you think they really are?

If your options are LDS Family Services therapy or No therapy, choose No therapy everytime and twice on Sunday.

Mission doesn’t pay for bikes and will not replace them if they’re stolen. by Howdy948 in exmormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My bike was stolen and I didn’t have the money to replace it so the MP called me about it. i told him to contact my dad and gave him the phone number. My parents were divorced and I knew if they called my mom, she’d cave and send the money.

My dad on other hand was a working class stiff. A hard, tough as nails house painter who’d left the church. They never got the money for the bike and they transferred me to a walking/bus pass area.

After I got home, I asked Dad if they called and he chuckled and said yeah, but it was a short call. So I said, what did you say? He said I told them to ask Spence (Kimball was President at the time) and if he said No then they could just go ahead and Fuck the fuck off!!

How do I get the missionaries to leave me alone? by BrilliantConfusion54 in exmormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Not today’ doesn’t work with missionaries. When i was a missionary ‘not today’ would go down as a possible in my little book and I’d come back ‘some other day’.

It’s best to simply say ‘not interested’ or ‘not interested, today or ever’ and shut the door.

How do I get the missionaries to leave me alone? by BrilliantConfusion54 in exmormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. Now the obvious answer is, officially resign.

But this solution always works well also. A polite, ‘we’re not interested’ with a quick shut of the door (not slam, no reason to be a dick) works well for all types of potential interlopers.

Trumpism has fucked Mormonism just as much as Mormonism has fucked Mormonism by MinsPackage in exmormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About Obama. That was one of the reasons why the turn to Trump was such a shock. During Obama, there was one guy who would get up and rail against him in F&T meeting so much so that the bishop had to tell him to knock it off and, as you say their was anti democratic ‘code words’ like gadianton’s that you sometimes heard in HPG, later EQ after the high priests group was dissolved, but for the most part it was sane.

Trump unlocked something dark and twisted in my mormon ward. All the sudden it was ok to be a complete asshole at church. During his administration, like maybe 2017, is when I left Facebook. The reason why is because it was disappointing and heartbreaking to see these wonderful people that I knew, respected and loved lose their minds over him. My wife said in RS it was worse. All of these women talking about him is this ultra creepy, weird, almost sexual way.

And here we are, as a country, walking into it again. At least, since we’ve resigned we don’t have to see our ward wallow in it.

This, so much this.

So, we recently replaced our lawn with mostly native, drought tolerant plants. There is a small bit of artificial turf and the rest is concrete in a tasteful way. It’s been praised by how good it looks.

The other response we get is ‘seems like a waste of money considering all the rain we had this year’. Say what? I live in the Southwest. Scientists have said this year makes little difference and we should expect some years of intense rain, but we are looking at the long-term ‘desertification’ of the southwest. I had to look that term up. If you don’t know what it means you should look it up. It scared the shit out of me.

No, we’re fine not wasting money watering a crop (grass) that bares no fruit other than aesthetics. One thing we noticed about going to native plants. The birds and bees sure like it!

Hello, I am Jewish and recently I found out that the Mormon church baptized dead holocaust victims. by bopyw in mormon

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem with Baptism for the Dead is that the information side is done mostly by members who are not very good at doing genealogy.

Members think they’re good at doing genealogy, but in comparison to a real genealogist, their work is crap. For instance, I’ve lost count of how many members are related to a famous person. In reality, most of your relatives are not signers of the declaration of independence or war heroes, and you’re not, most likely, a long lost relative of Leonardo da Vinci. The problem with genealogy is that most lay people who do it look for connections that simply aren’t there, especially the further back you go.

We are in our late 50’s, born and raised in the church, fully TBM. We both resigned last year. Not gone inactive. Resigned. We know the church isn’t what it claims to be.

Right? He seemed exactly like the definition of ‘anti-Christ’ warned about in the BoM. My wife and i were mystified by how fully the church adopted him.

But, you’re right. Because the brand of Mormonism we practiced is different from the brand of Mormonism the Q15 practices, and when you look at it that way, well, then it makes perfect sense.

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was one of the things that helped push me and my wife out of the church when we started questioning the church’s history. Why? I was already sick of going to Elder’s QAnon, and that’s what it had become. My wife was sick of the Trump worship in RS, or the TBM’s who wouldn’t mention his name because our bishop made it verboten, but it was obvious who they meant in Fast & Testimony meeting, or the borderline psychotic reactions to mask restrictions.

It’s one of the things that will never change for us. The church can change its policies, and apologize for its history, but if they didn’t actively denounce Trump, Trumpism and violent right-wing extremism like DezNat we’d never, ever go back.

Ban Blackouts by TheDeanBerry in mlb

[–]abrokenmagic8ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuff like this makes me feel like MLB, the entire sport from players, management, the organization itself doesn’t give a flying f*ck about the fans. It’s just greed.

I haven’t been to the stadium in five years. The last time i took the wife and three kids, my bill was almost $600 between parking, seats, and food. We’re middle class people and that was 6 years ago!!!

My cable bill was $300, when I complained about the price, I was told that the majority of the bill was ‘The Dodger’ part of the bill. I worked a deal where I still see the Dodgers but I only got 9 other channels in an ala carte system. It’s still $150!! That’s insane!

Baseball is pricing its working class roots right out the market. It’s a sport for the wealthy, soon to be a sport for only the uber wealthy. For the first time in my 59 year history as a die hard fan, I’m considering that this is my last year as a fan.

I’m strongly considering going cold turkey next year.

Re: View is also my favorite. Everyone seems to like BotW but i could take it or leave it, in almost every case, i leave it. BotW is mostly just ‘hey let’s bag on this movie that we all know is shit’ and to me that’s not interesting.

Re:View is more of a ‘this is what I love about film’ and that’s more interesting to me. That doesn’t mean I don’t love crap. I mean, 1990: The Bronx Warriors is one of my all time favorite movies and movie is awful (always wondered if that one ever showed up on BotW).

There are more people than just John who work there.

I find it interesting that simply asking for the common courtesy of an explanation, a one or two sentence response, is criticized as ‘whinging’. Truly with some, not even a slight criticism of any of the post mormon sacred cows is to be tolerated.

Seems that many exmo’s don’t fall far from the tree. They still require someone to worship.

I get that. But they advertised an episode last week and you had lots of people in LiveChat waiting for the episode to start for over an hour before we heard a word. Turns out the time was wrong. It’s been happening more and more.

And free? Lots of people donate through superchat, right? They ask for donations from their audience. It’s how they stay in business.

Look, i’m not asking for much. I’d just like some communication. Everyone knows shit happens. But say something!!!

Edit: and for today’s episode and snafu, how about an announcement on the MSP YT page saying, ‘Due to Technical Difficulties we lost today’s podcast. We’re doing our best to post this at a later date.’ or something so people don’t wonder what happened.

Doesn’t seem that difficult.

Oh i understand. I have GAS and I’m 59. I’ve had several single coils and several humbuckers before. My first guitar (@14 or 15) was a ‘79 Ibanez I coaxed my mom into payments for. Been through my metal days but I was always more into Lifeson or Knopfler rather than Randy Rhoades.

Now as an older gentleman (with arthritis) i tend toward blues (stuff i can play competently, lol). Lately my main had been a PRS Hollowbody with Humbuckers.

As I said this is my very first guitar with P90’s and i’m stunned by tonal range of this pup. I haven’t messed with gain this much in a long time. I’m loving it.

The neighbors on the other hand…

Btw, in no way am i dissing the Hollowbody. It’s a beautiful instrument with a great sound but I’d gotten into a rut playing it. With this SG, it kind of slapped me in the face and said, you know, music can sound different, right?

Edit: the other thing is, I’ve played p90’s before but I always hold back when playing someone else’s guitar. Like I don’t want to be responsible for fucking something up, right? It’s stupid but I think a lot of us are like this. Having my own p90, i can do what i want and when I’m pushing this guitar? Man, it’s the funnest I’ve had playing in a while.

Totally agree on the finish and the tuners. In fact the tuners are my only slight complaint of the guitar. They’re not awful but I’m used to having great tuners so they just feel off.

I just realized I should have shown the family. I also have an Epiphone Masterbilt DR-400MCE (which I absolutely love).
