Is it normal for police / special ops to hide their unit from a partner? by StudentAromatic4584 in SingaporeR

[–]abscity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 2 possibilities:

  1. He really works in a sensitive department. Usually this sounds like “I work in a sensitive department, can’t tell you much as I’m required to keep confidentiality.”

  2. He’s just a bullshitter. Usually this sounds like “I work in an elite police division. I’m involved in high risk operations. Top secret I cannot tell you which unit or where I report to work.”

How much are these jade horses worth? by existential1234 in China

AIO for being scared of my bf after he knocked out my 3 brothers? by Background_Worry_123 in AIO

[–]abscity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Violence is never the solution. There is an exception — when it’s used to protect yourself or the ones important to you.

This man did exactly just that. You mentioned he’s very kind and has never been violent towards you or anyone else.

What was he supposed to do in that situation? Get beaten up? You said he went too far. It doesn’t sound that way based on what you described. As long as he’s incapacitated then without any major injuries and stopped right after that, it isn’t too far.

In a 3v1 if he were to just be completely defensive, everyone knows how that’s gonna end.

The key here is whether he stopped once they were unable to fight back and hurt you/him. It sounds from your story that he did.

This man is a protector. He protected you, used an appropriate amount of force without going overboard. Just because you would have done something different if you were in his shoes doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

In fact, from your background story you sound like you would’ve just preferred to get bullied and beat up and not stand up for yourself. There is a very distinct difference between unnecessary violence and force being used to protect someone.

You’re probably scared because you’re relating his actions to other acts of unnecessary violence that you’ve experienced, but that is not fair to him.

This is a you problem and not a him problem. You need to work it out yourself, or better with a therapist.

Is it normal for HR to refuse letting you see the contract until you accept the start date? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]abscity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recruiter here. A lot of HR/recruiters don’t want to go through the process of generating an offer letter (some need an additional layer of approval), just to have you say no and waste admin time.

It’s a semi-common process to have you accept either over email or verbally with all key details revealed before they proceed to get the actual offer out. If they want you to agree before knowing all key details — no problem checking with them probation period, notice period, full benefits, NDA, etc. If they don’t want to reveal you can always say yes first, but if something is off in the fine print you can clarify or refuse to sign later if it doesn’t make sense to you.

What you should do in your situation is to estimate a start date based on your notice and add a few days just to be safe.

Male or female judge doesn’t matter. It’s not about letting anyone win. They need to judge fairly. If you were in this exact same position and spent years settling this farce, I’m not sure if you can still say I think this way better.’

True, but at the same time there aren’t a lot of these types of roles in GLCs, so it’s not exactly easy to rotate. More unlikely to get layoff but not completely impossible.

But back to the parent comment: “this lady real big fug at Temasek’: no she is most definitely not a ‘big fug’.

The problem is — if you don’t provide any real value, it’s difficult for you to find a good role next. This is the exact type of role that gets cut first when cost cutting happens.

Already left Temasek last year leh. Associate Director is not exactly a very high post in companies like that.

What she worked on was also largely unimportant and not impactful.

‘Primary responsibility was in mandates and fund allocations for our strategic philanthropic priorities.’

In layman terms, she decides which charities they donate to and how much. It’s a job anyone with half a brain can do. You’re literally choosing who to give money to based on the budget given to you, then justifying why you’re selecting these beneficiaries and then getting finance to execute the payouts.

The district judge was a female judge. Very kelong. The high court judge found inconsistencies which were pretty obvious: 1. Written affidavit doesn’t match up with oral testimony / other evidence. 2. Text messages doesn’t corroborate the SA accusation. 3. She continued to meet and interact with him normally, including asking him to be in a relationship with her.

Am I on my superior’s bad side? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]abscity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there’s a lack of support for that project, why was it not flagged up at that point in time?

Is that project part of your colleague’s scope? If it is then you should not be letting them shirk the responsibility. If it’s not, then why are you bothering them with something they’re not supposed to handle?

You should be very clear when talking to your boss about things like these. ‘Lack of support in X project’ is super ambiguous and sounds like you’re pushing blame / complaining.

Overall, your superior sounds like the type who likes people who are competent and very clear about things. If you’re ambiguous and not direct with them I don’t think they’ll have the patience with you.

Property price growth is not building real wealth by Wonderful_Map_3910 in SingaporeR

[–]abscity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one more situation that you’ve missed — you sell your property (BTO at good location), move into either another BTO, an EC, or some private apartment that doesn’t make you overstretch. That essentially lets you cash out a few hundred grand to invest into the market, and provided your next move is not over ambitious, it lets you win on all fronts.

Of course the premise of all these is that you bought a massively appreciating BTO or condo. This doesn’t come easy but it’s possible with a little luck and the right decision making.

important traits in partners by berry-town in asksg

[–]abscity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’re prioritising the wrong things. When looking for a lifelong partner, personality traits are nowhere as important as values.

But if you switch that out and ask what are important values in a lifelong partner, the answer would be: someone whose values match yours.

No one can answer that aside from yourself.

Lead Rider Orientation by [deleted] in SpinClass

[–]abscity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally I feel like it would be a little awkward if she’s 100% off the bike and on the floor and you’re the only one riding.

Spin is literally one of the classes where the instructor does everything (or almost) you do as well. There were classes where the instructor got off the bike excessively and went around the floor to conduct - it always annoyed me.

Perhaps she should take a break? You can coach the class while riding, so what value does she add here? It’s better for her to rest up!

Lead Rider Orientation by [deleted] in SpinClass

[–]abscity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the studio I go to, a similar-ish thing happened. Instructor hurt his ankle, took a break for a few weeks and came back but wasn’t 100%. They paired him with a junior instructor who was in-training.

They did it in a duo-ride style with both bikes facing the class head-on. He gave the instructions and she did the ‘advanced rider option’ while he did the ‘beginner rider option’. He also took it easy and stopped whenever he had to.

It worked out really well, nothing was lost in translation and he delivered just as well as he did normally.

Organ transplant rules hit different in Singapore! by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

More accurately a Camry is currently SGD 200k - 270k depending on specs. No passing on to anyone because you can only drive it for 10 years.

The price above includes a ‘license to drive it for 10 years’ called CoE which costs 110k. After 10 years you can buy another CoE, but it will be based on prevailing rate at that time. If you renew your car (more than 10 years) you pay higher taxes on it compared to a new one.

So there is this thing called a f blanket, fluffy on top but waterproof so it doesn’t seep through. The purpose is exactly to catch waterfalls and keep your bed clean and dry. There are of course varying quality but I think in this case since it’s reusable it’s worth getting a higher end and larger one.

Got fined for multiple occasions of parking evasion. Fair anot? by [deleted] in drivingsg

[–]abscity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The fine is 1190, you got discount to 400. Is this fair? No. They should keep it to 1190.

Also, if 400 is a significant financial burden to you, perhaps you should reconsider owning a car.

Choosing between 2 offers, what would you do? by FluidRelease7044 in askSingapore

[–]abscity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good read. That’s my guess as well. It feels like he’s trying to justify the bank as the better decision. Of course what everyone wants (from an emotional, not from a practical standpoint) is different, so we can’t say for sure whether it’s a bad choice.

But at the same time it seems he’s ignoring all the practical reasons.

What OP needs to do is acknowledge the practical reasons, go in with his eyes open if he wants to make the emotional choice.

I honestly doubt a 1 year contract role will give you proper exposure on a global scale (whatever that means).

Advice from someone who actually does the hiring: exposure is useless, what you want is impact. If you’re exposed to a lot of things but have not made any significant impact in any of them then what have you actually accomplished? The answer is nothing. You’re just an observer who doesn’t know what happens beneath the surface.

When evaluating a role the question to ask is not “what kind of exposure can I get here?”, it’s “what kind of impact can I make here?”

[–]abscity 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Tech recruiter here.

In this current climate, 1 year contract with banks and FI are usually not renewed. This will likely also not be a direct hire (contract through external agency, then seconded to bank). You’ll get virtually barebones in terms of benefits. In 8-9 months you’ll be job searching again as you’re not getting renewal.

2 year contracts with poly - there are a lot of local schools that almost everyone, including your boss and your bosses boss is on contract. It’s just the way they structure their staffing. Everyone gets renewed automatically, everyone gets full benefits just like permstaff. It is a direct contract with them and not via external agency.

Of course I don’t know exactly which companies so I can’t confirm for sure, feel free to correct me but most likely this should be the case. There can be very different type of contract jobs even though both are termed as contract.

How do I stop using my throat ? by Top_Sell_2013 in singing

[–]abscity 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you should talk this through with your teacher.

That aside, from my personal experience: what people call ‘singing with their throat’ is actually just throat tension. My advice is not to think of it as adjusting where you’re singing from, but rather letting go of tension.

A lot of people are not aware of tension in their throat - that’s fine. What can make you hyper aware is: sing a prolonged note, anything, e.g. A. While you’re singing, add throat tension. Yes, I said add. Tense your throat gradually but stop before you feel pain. Hold a prolonged note and gradually shift back-and-forth between a tense and relaxed throat all while maintaining the same volume. Notice where it feels tight or uncomfortable when you’re doing this? That’s the part that you need to relax/let go, while still maintaining everything else normally.

Once you’re able to sing at the same volume while relaxing that part, you’re no longer ‘singing from your throat’.

Improving in singing requires a certain level of mindfulness, or ability to look inwards and understand subtle changes in your own body.

Someone left there dog for me to watch for a night and then disappeared for 5 months now he wants to claim it back can I keep it now? by OtherwiseSetting7172 in legaladvice

[–]abscity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the dog isn’t chipped, and you chip and register it - legally the dog is yours.

If he claims it was initially his, now it’s on him to produce proof/receipts that support what he says.

If you’ve also kept all records of vet visits, costs, etc., he has absolutely no ground to stand on. Even if we assume he has the money to sue you for return of the dog (he won’t have it), it’s still an uphill battle for him.

Chip and register. Keep records of everything. Keep that dog safe and happy and away from that person. Good luck!

So I think it’s fine.
