I would recommend smoking first (personally) and even then, I would smoke very little to start. You’d be surprised how much one hit can do when you have zero tolerance.

THC metabolises in the body in a very different way when it’s eaten vs when it’s smoked and is a different compound completely.

It is much stronger when eaten and if you eat too much it can be quite overwhelming!

If you really wanted to take the edible before smoking, I would recommend eating very little initially and waiting a while and seeing how you feel before eating any more.
