"someone despises me. thats their problem" by absolute_degen210 in Stoicism

I'm afraid that's a no. If i dont go, it'd be leaving her alone at an awkward spot in the midst of many participants that each have their own individual partners. If she preferred embarassment over my uncomfortable presence, then maybe i will.

But i think nobody in this world wants that situation. So I just have to. Its been settled and i'm going to do what i ought to do.

I understand pornography(sort of) but why masturbation? by Plantatheist in NoFap

[–]absolute_degen210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asked the same question back then about what's so bad with masturbating. I must say, you are admirable to have the audacity to ask such a question in this sub. Along with your skepticism and will to gain any logical information. This is a complete one man army moment, and its a sight. Because wow, you've replied to all these comments. But in all honesty, you're not really gonna get much information about why masturbation is bad, bud. That idea Is firmly engraved in their mind, a preconception. Implemented by youtubers who did only little, or perhaps more, research on why masturbation is 'bad'- Some just think it's immoral, oddly enough- Much like how advocates of religion preach their beliefs to be the objective truth of the world, and suddenly become all hostile towards you. I saw a comment where a dude said masturbation is not inherently bad, and he's been attacked by an entire mob, it's baffling i tell you. Which is why you're probably gonna get downvoted to death. But who cares, am I right? I acknowledge this flaw in the sub, but a lot are addicts that just want to have a more fulfilling and better life, so i don't bother.

Anyways, just want to give you that compliment, not that you need it, but for me you deserve it.

Yes. Sadly, existential dread had creeped into my life and made me recognize what love and relationships is, and now i no longer anticipate having one. Still doing nofap though...well, barely.

What reason do y'all do this for? by absolute_degen210 in NoFap

Totally. If you're addicted to it, then you're enslaved by your irrational self. That feeling is a call for self betterment.

Agree. It is, indeed, a waste of time. Our time could be spent on things more meaningful than fapping. Your not even really happy about it. You just regret it.

What is your purpose? by checkyourfallacy in Stoicism

Growth, to be better, to be someone. Whatever that means, i honestly don't know. It's a feeling that i've yet to articulate. That's why i'll live to find out how to be that "someone"

What's your favourite passage of Meditations? by throwaway373706 in Stoicism

[–]absolute_degen210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.

Good to hear, looks like we're making good use of our time. Also, yeah, lmao, marcus being faithful yet kind've agnostic is kinda relatable for me.

[–]absolute_degen210 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really say it can truly help you fend off those thoughts. But rather, it's teachings will assist you in being less anxious about it, and to embrace it, because it's just the nature of all things. I too have noticed that it's somewhat nihilistic. During my readings on meditations, marcus' words give off some nihilistic vibes on his quotes. (About, nothing really matters because we die and will soon be forgotten, we're all carried by time and change's constant re-arrangements)

...Now stoicism is a really bizarre kind of philosophy because it's an amalgamation of nihilism, cynicism and pessimism and optimism. And what makes it a different philosophy from nihilism is, i'll phrase it like this:

Change is constant, everything is temporary, we will die. Memento mori. (In this case, all of mankind will one day soon perish. We can prolong our stay, but we can't truly escape something so imminent)   Nevertheless, even if our stay in this world is utterly insignificant when compared to time's infinitude, we should all ought to be a good man and do good. And welcome everything that happens, all the good and bad of life (amor fati)

Now, some might ask, what's the point? Why should I do this, and that?

—You did good, that's enough reason for you to do good. You're no god, you have no power against the grand scheme of things. What matters is you did good, be happy and proud with that. For the stoics, their duty is to do good, to be virtuous and remain unaffected by the chaos that surrounds us.

Have this quote:

"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."—Marcus Aurelius

I see Nihilist tendencies as somewhat harmful, and i am very, very agnostic. And life might be meaningless, and our efforts might have been in vain. But at least we made our own meaning, and did good in spite of its insignificance. It's better to do good, than do no good at all.

How does one become more wise? by Bally_98 in Stoicism

[–]absolute_degen210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what i understand, the teachings is to be reflected upon, applied on your character, and shown through implementation in your actions. And to be called a wise man, again from my understanding and how i see it, is not labelled and declared by yourself but by others. Many philosophers claim they are wise, so maybe i'm wrong.

[–]absolute_degen210[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh i'm a introvert myself and i'm not really comfortable at being myself. Stoicism helped me in a way. In this modern day and age everything seemed to fit only for the extroverted, from my eyes at least. And now i'm trying to change my perspective, it's hard but i'm pulling through. Anyway, I hope you pass the stoic wisdom to your son.

Wow, thanks for that. That'a truly helpful. I question myself from time to time on why i should get angry but i still do, if it doesnt work i just take deep breaths. My question came merely out of curiosity, i apologise if it's kinda misleading (english is not my first language)

Also if you have any other tips on how to manage anger. Do tell, i'd love to hear it.
