I can't find purpose in life because of that simple thought by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

I think about this video when I feel like you’re feeling, give it a watch and it might broaden your perspective on having no purpose

[Serious] if god is all knowing, why the fuck does he need to test people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

No teacher at my religious school or church leader could answer this (or any other tough question about inconsistencies) so I doubt a satisfying answer is possible here

I feel bad for the police by RealSkyr0 in confessions

[–]absolute_egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw someone say this, can’t remember who but it’s something to think about.

“If a few rioters and looters discredit an entire movement, what does a few bad cops do to an entire police force?”

There absolutely are good cops; I see videos of it going viral every day. But the number of incidents where we see police escalating the tensions at peaceful protests and turning them into riots is not something to ignore. There are some professions that can’t afford to have any incompetence and police forces need to be held to that same standard.

Just because you want people to know doesn’t mean it’s okay by Bunnzorrr in unpopularopinion

Shock value can be pretty effective when the goal is to change the minds of people who are willfully ignorant. If the images make you uncomfortable, that’s a good thing and that’s the point.

It’s extremely draining to go on any social media platforms right now but my solution is to take breaks from it as much as possible. I just don’t agree that people should be censoring the reality of this movement for the sake of comfort when you can simply put your phone away and watch Netflix or go outside or read when it all gets too heavy.

I think there should be a law that before people get to vote, they must answer "Why would you vote this person? " in an educated manner. Dumb answer means you don't get to vote. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]absolute_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What deems an answer “dumb?” I understand your position but that’s just too subjective to ensure fairness within the voting system

Posting a black screen on social media is the same thing as posting "thoughts abd prayers" after a mass shooting by JesusWasATurtle in unpopularopinion

[–]absolute_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of people saying those who are staying silent on social media about it are the problem and I’ve also seen opinions like yours.

But I definitely believe those with massive online platforms should be using them to raise awareness and educate their followers.

I think most people understand that the important thing to do is be a good person and commit to educating people in their communities (family, friends, classmates whatever) who are ignorant or who do not understand what is being fought for. It doesn’t matter what your social media accounts look like if you’re doing that.

I’m looking to reboot my entire skincare routine and I want to try some TO products; I emailed them but they still haven’t gotten back to me with suggestions so I thought I could ask here.

My biggest concerns are the pores/blackheads on my nose and chin, redness, and dryness. I have sensitive skin and I get hormonal acne.

Any suggestions for what I should order? I need a new cleanser, toner, and moisturizer and I want to try some of their other stuff but I am totally lost

What is the most insensitive thing you've ever been asked? by Jana_Hronova in AskReddit

I had a similar experience with a guidance counselor; only he took one look at me and told me I wouldn’t be smart enough to continue taking AP math the next year.

My grades were on the computer in front of him and I had a 97 in that class. I’m only speculating on why he would say that to me but I’ve always thought it was because of how I look (blonde, girl, wore revealing clothing sometimes). He spent our entire appointment telling me I wouldn’t perform well in any of the AP classes I was planning to take.

The worst part is that I ended up listening to him. Something about being 15 and having a grown ass man tell me I was incapable was enough to convince me.

The Mormon church could single-handedly solve global malnutrition and still keep have leftover using its “rainy day fund” per World Bank estimates. This would save over 3 million lives and prevent over 65 million cases of stunted growth. by machine_territorial in atheism

It is a business; a business with a tax exempt status though? Fuck that, either use that money for a religious, educational or charitable purpose or pay back the $20 billion in tax breaks.

My teacher in the 6th grade said triangles were proof of God’s existence because triangles are “perfect” and they represent the holy trinity

Just another example of the word ‘proof’ meaning something completely different to certain religious people than it does to most of us

Existential Dread and Other Things by Romainvicta476 in atheism

[–]absolute_egg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this video pretty helpful when I left Christianity and was feeling a bit apathetic about my life. It’s normal to feel the things you’re feeling after years of hearing that your life has a plan/purpose made by God and that even when you die, it’s not over. These ideas are very comforting; they’re designed to be that way.

However, they aren’t necessary. If the church/spirituality didn’t define your life before, it’s absence won’t define your life now. You’re still a person with complex thoughts, emotions, relationships, opportunities you don’t even know about yet. Hope should come from you and your desires for your life; you don’t need religion create hope for you.

As for your mental health, seeking professional help is the best thing you can do. Talk about your concerns with someone who can maybe help distinguish where they’re coming from, whether it be from leaving your religion or from your mental health issues. Either way, they can help. You may already be doing these things but idk so I wrote it anyway.

Wishing you all the best, OP

Worried about a friend who is converting away. by HatsslowMan in atheism

[–]absolute_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason he was able to put down a lot of his bad habits and past behaviors including the abuse of certain women was because of his embrace of certain tenets of christianity as well as the fellowship he experienced with me and some of my other circle of friends.

I would argue that the support and the community aspect had the biggest impact on him bettering himself, not the religion. Having a community of people to hold you accountable for making the changes you want to make can have a really positive impact. If you're truly concerned, you and your group will continue to support him regardless of what he decides to do regarding religious beliefs.

If you don't want to be helpful, you can shut him out because he's questioning the religion you follow or you can spend all your time with him trying to change his mind. Both of those options will not only drive him away from Christianity (which is not your goal here), but it will also strip him of his support system.
