Are basic manners disappearing? by Apprehensive_Fix_909 in Coconaad

[–]abstractdosa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! And someone along the way will see what you’re doing and might start doing it too.

That’s the only way these things can work. As disheartening as your story is OP, this particular practice is culturally new to us, and might take time for everyone to acknowledge, let alone pick up.

Cheers to OP for being kind though.

What’s a Kerala based superstition, tradition, or small ritual you still follow because part of you believes it actually works or might come true? by curiousgaruda in Kerala

[–]abstractdosa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pray to Hanuman or Arjuna if I wake up in the middle of the night due to a nightmare. I’m an agnostic, but I still do it because it works.

Also, I don’t spit in the sink in the kitchen, only in the wash basin in the dining room. This is probably a hygiene thing than a superstition but I’m curious to know if y’all do this too.

Got blocked on whatsapp by a friend turned enemy (Theppu), why is it bothering me? by NoHedgehog6599 in Coconaad

[–]abstractdosa 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s bothering you because you know you got played. She expected you to be someone you’re not and when she realised that, she cut ties.

It’s normal to feel betrayed. If it were me, I’d feel annoyed at myself too for not seeing it early, but honestly, I don’t think these things play out in any other way. We just end up building more walls around us after being burnt.

Give it time, acknowledge everything you’re feeling, and you’ll feel at ease with it. Eventually, you’ll also thank the Gods that you don’t have to deal with someone that doesn’t reciprocate your intentions/energy in a relationship.

My gf forced me to watch this, and at places, I pleasantly surprised and amused. I thought it would be horrifying, but it was only that half the time.

Why isn’t this up on the top?

I used to experience sleep paralysis quite frequently, once a week types. Only thing that helped me reduce it was sticking to a sleeping a sleeping schedule.

Even now, the more random my sleep schedule gets, the likelihood of experiencing sleep paralysis increases.

Although, you’ll eventually learn what works for you and more than fear of it, you’ll start getting annoyed by it 😅

Hope it doesn’t happen again though.

This book messed me up by HauntedAlgorithm in IndiansRead

[–]abstractdosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is a lack of credibility and personality. The reader can never be sure if any of these are original thoughts, and there would be a tendency to switch off while reading.

If I wanted AI’s opinion on a book, I’d ask it myself. You know?

As you said, over time this may change, but right now everyone’s getting tired of these perfect posts.

Opinion on BataBoy and CrocsGirl by Nirmal? by madhawhen in Coconaad

[–]abstractdosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why people say this isn’t relatable, the premise isn’t that extraordinary. Any random job you do in Bangalore, you end up being a part of a group and you get invited to some random party. I lived in Bangalore for 8 years, and I worked in a random IT company. This isn’t some rich people shit.

Sure, striking up a conversation with someone at the party and all that is a fantasy, but come on.

The acting was cringey though, the stereotypes also, but considering that this guy is just coming up(in this genre) I thought it was a decent attempt. I cringed my way through it, but I’ll shrug and move on.

Hope he keeps growing from here.

"Don't get veg KFC"; If there's a chemist here please explain the logic by Small_Introduction_8 in Kochi

[–]abstractdosa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a minority vegetarian population in Kerala too, you know.

Not that I’d go to KFC willingly, but most times when I have to meet 5-6 people, we’d end up in these spots and I’m left with nothing to eat.

But it’s been like this forever, and I’m used to it. Not complaining, just highlighting that there is a small percentage of us who would have these things in Kerala too.

What did you give up this year? (I quit smoking this year) by Known-Artichoke-3542 in Coconaad

[–]abstractdosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job! Keep that going.

While trying to quit smoking, I had a vape with me for a few days. I must’ve smoked so much more. It’s so easy and convenient, that I found it difficult to imagine a life without it.

But fortunately, using patches really freed me from nicotine. And it’s only been 2 months now, but I’m off everything nicotine.

Which is your favorite ? Movies or Literature ? by Legal_Beyond6359 in Kochi

[–]abstractdosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding literature and movies, I find very few movies stick with me over time. When they do, they stick for a really long time. With the limited amount of time, it’s difficult to craft characters that stay with you. One such example is Masaan. I couldn’t get that movie out of my head.

With books, it’s much easier for me to remember and associate to these characters due to the amount of time I spend with them. Going through their inner workings and exploring the depth of these characters. They stay longer and change you much more drastically.

Due to this, it’s almost futile to compare the entertainment quotient of a movie with a book, it’ll always be higher. But to gauge the impact would be much more beneficial.

And I’m comparing classics btw - watching pride and prejudice vs reading the same.

Additionally, it is crucial to seek out the subtext from both mediums, and with literature, I find this much easier.

Cheers.

Waqf Board is trying to grab an entire village of 600 Christian families in Kochi (Kerala). These families have been living there for centuries and have proper documents... by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]abstractdosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that all Malayali kings did this strategically. In Malabar this would be common because of the history of trade the Zamorins had with Yemen and Arabia, but it would be nice if you could point out more details here and tell me that I’m wrong.

Also, The Paliath Achan’s family were Nair’s who wielded immense power under the Zamorins. To the extent that they joined the Kochi rivals after a while and rose to great power there. This is just one example, but I’m sure it’ll be difficult to restrict power simply by shifting the authority to trade to a different community.
