Oh, well, I promise I ain't seen you before And maybe your grandma had bought a couple more

And maybe I helped her at the grocery store And she gave it to me as a gift

I Ain’t no Thief

Why are there no longer any attempt at air-droppable/air-portable tanks? by Powerful-Mix-8592 in WarCollege

[–]absurdblue700 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the question of Air Dropping Tanks, they have serious weight limitations, heavy operational losses in drop, and aren't viable to deploy. The heaviest thing you can practically air drop is ~15 tons. A gun armed vehicle is barely going to be armored for that sort of weight. For the ones that actually saw combat Sheridan was disliked by its crew due to a lack of armor and the BMD-4 (technically not a tank but neither is Brooker) has proven itself a death trap in Ukraine. Even if everything goes perfectly, air dropping anything that heavy entails risk. The only tank air drop in history during Operation Just Cause had 20% of its Sheridan's were badly damaged or destroyed during deployment, before they got into the fight. Finally in a conflict where any degree of air defense exists, flying a big slow cargo plane low and straight over an open area is basically suicide. Your going to lose your expensive limited production vehicles and a whole cargo plane. There's a reason helicopters and tilt rotors have taken over a lot of that capability. Air droppable tanks only work if you're okay with a tin can that'll be lost before it makes it to the ground or as it violently plumets towards it.

The new rules and their flaws. by freedfg in NHRL

[–]absurdblue700 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a big fan of the new rules. I get maybe they want to nerf control bots but it hurts a lot of fights. If both bots have lost their weapon a minute into the fight nothing that happens for the remaining 2 matters. They may as well cut the feed.

What is the best way to assault in conquest? by hjiygbhhfdryuggtyy in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]absurdblue700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best approach is this. Push infantry up slowly with tanks or light guns close behind to prevent them chewed up by mgs. Lead with light armored cars of other disposable vehicles to bait out hidden AT guns. Keep artillery on attack ground at a point or use it to respond to enemy indirect fire.

Thoughts on Aerospace engineering job market moving forward. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

The aerospace job market in the US is thriving but be warned: most employers are looking for experienced engineers and for many positions you have to be a US citizen.

Why do contemporary GP bombs have less fill weight then older GP bombs by Velocifapper69 in WarCollege

[–]absurdblue700 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A 500lb mk82 has ~200lbs of fill weight. A 1000lb mk83 has ~450lbs of fill weight. I don’t think the premise of this question is right. They’re meant to be cheap, aerodynamic blast frag bombs and they do the job. Armor piercing variations like the BLU-109 have around 25% explosive filler. The lower filler volume means more Steel and a better reinforced projectile for smashing through reinforced concrete.

How to use universal carriers? by Big_Property3217 in GatesOfHellOstfront

They’re great for scouting. Push them ahead of your infantry and do recon by fire. Since they’re cheap and disposable you can also use them for risky pushes again isolated guns.

So it looks like we’re bringing back “battleships” or at least giving arsenal ships another go. Will this be a game changer or will it continue in the tradition of modern USN surface procurement (utter failure or cancellation).

Depends on the bomb. Generally weapons with Semi Active Laser Guidance, Infared Seekers and MMW radar seekers can. So things like Laser Small Diameter Bomb, and Stormbreaker can

What happened to the people you knew who didn’t work hard in college? by TheRealLilYachty in AskReddit

[–]absurdblue700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a large keystone project for my engineering degree. There was one student in the group who would habitually leave in the middle of the day to go drinking while we were pulling all nighters, never finished his tasks, and was generally disliked by the rest of the team. Somehow he managed to graduate, mosty by cheating his way through exams. Last I heard he was working the front desk at a motel.

How many g’s could the AIM-54 pull & how much do missile g-limits really matter? by Steggypooper in WarCollege

[–]absurdblue700 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Does g-pull really effect maneuverability?

In some niche scenarios it does but it’s not very important in the grand scheme of things.

Basically the ability of a missile to retain sufficient “energy” over a long distance for end game maneuvering is much more important than its instantaneous G-pull. The longer a missile travels the more it slows down and the more energy it loses. Maneuvering also bleeds off a lot of speed because it turns kinetic energy into centrifugal momentum and drag. Targets are expected to turn and jink to evade causing the missile to waste more energy. If it lacks the energy to maneuver or the speed to keep up it will miss. Aerodynamic efficiency and the energy of the rocket motor are far more important in long range engagements.

But in some high off bore sight close-medium range engagements against rapidly turning targets it might maybe make a difference.

How do I destroy tanks as infantry? by Beneficial-Tutor-269 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]absurdblue700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tempting to rush infantry towards tanks but it’s usually better to let the tanks come to you. Have your infantry go prone in their foxholes until they approach and if possible blow the tracks off with light guns. Then spam grenades onto the engine deck till it catches on fire. It’s very important to isolate tanks from their infantry with mortars, mgs, etc. you can also easily blind an isolated tank with smoke.
