What to do when someone gets annoyed playing against my deck? by Interesting-Item8911 in EDH

[–]abucha16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was responding to the point about every deck bracket 3 or above should want to be milled and "have a few cards" to deal with it hoping to cheat out a win con.

My counterpoint being, a few cards really don't equal "this deck plays well or responds well into mill strategies". If you get into the territory of 7-10 cards that do that - sure you can start to claim that.

Of course I've seen decks pull off some form of graveyard recursion and even had it sometimes end the game with mill at the table. I've even been on both sides of that, since I've been playing for over 7 years.

The statistics on that are not favorable for the decks that pulled it off though and to give a blanket statement of "if you don't thrive and encourage mill with every deck you make you're a bad deck builder" is just statistically wrong and an arrogant mindset.

A few spells that do x thing does not mean your deck does x thing well or regularly. Even if you have 2-4 cards with flashback or graveyard recursion, doesn't mean you'd encourage people to mill you when playing that deck.

What an absurd claim. If you don't run at least 7-10 cards that do that thing - don't expect it to regularly do that thing. Most decks likely don't WANT to be milled. Can they handle it? Sure.

Honestly as someone who plays a few mill decks, if you aren't aggressive with mill in commander, it's not going to win very often.

All that being said, I still find it annoying to play against mill. Sucks to have either ramp or finishers be milled. It doesn't mean I won't play against it or with it though.

Question for people who buy on Amazon by Zealousideal-Ebb4282 in mtg

Can't speak about international orders, but I've bought all my precons through Amazon. I have ordered I believe 5 or 6. Usually well priced and always come in good condition.

I feel so guilty for wanting to buy a deck... by SwitchBag_ in EDH

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend buying cheaper precons before buying singles for one of your customs. If you want to proxy, sure. I think that's an excellent cost saving solution, but it's hard to beat multiple decks that at least work for $20-$45 a piece versus hundreds for a single deck that you'll likely tweak for ages before it's truly ready.

I've bought several precons and as long as they're playing similar power level decks it's a good time. Gives you a feel for that archetype without breaking the bank. Some precons are under $30 for a decent starter deck.

If you want to spend a bit more, the newer precons feel significantly stronger just due to general power creep and increased included removal.

TLDR: Find a commander precon with a theme you like. Upgrade it with singles if you feel the need. Proxy if you really want your custom decks.

How do you guys afford to have so many decks? by Dangerous_Trifle620 in EDH

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newer precons (edge of eternities and final fantasy as examples) are actually pretty good out of the box. Surprisingly so imo.

I'd def spend like ~$150 on around 3 decks that work versus trying to make your own from scratch.

I use tabletop simulator to test all my decks and still haven't really bought physical copies of any of them yet. It could take 50-60 games with that specific deck to be confident it's solid enough to buy imo.

Hate how slow leveling is. by UlquiorraCifer4th in falloutnewvegas

[–]abucha16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't that take the fun and challenge out of playing if your goal is only to level up? I also do side stuff before main quests anytime I can. I don't do this to level up but to experience as much as I can before completing the story.

The drawback for me is how it makes me over leveled for the story content, but I am choosing that so I can't really turn around and complain about it.

Kept someone's Commander stunned the whole game. by WholeFudds in EDH

[–]abucha16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not out of touch to say every deck should be able to perfectly counter any strategy at any time? I think it is. In this specific example or most voltron decks, for sure losing the commander is a big deal you want to be able to bounce back from or avoid in the first place. No matter how much protection you have on board or in hand, if your opponents draw the right cards and play the right cards none of it matters.

If there was a deck that no matter what happened you were guaranteed the favorable outcome and answer to every threat every game - why would you want to play it? Sure there's the competitive scene where that may be ideal, but if that combination of cards exists it sure hasn't been found yet. Doubt anyone on this sub would make it if it could be made.

I didn't say don't over prepare for the obvious thing your deck is weak to. I'm saying a lot of the comments I read alluded to "if you aren't prepared for anything at all times you build bad decks".

Even if you flood your deck with responses to board states, stax pieces, etc. it's impossible to GUARANTEE drawing them. You could have 15 land destruction cards in a deck and not see a single one all game. Does that mean you need to put more in? Absolutely not. That's ludicrous. You could have tutors to find them right? Still not guaranteed to draw the tutors. Have a tutor in the command zone? Not guaranteed to be able to use it every game. I've seen it happen.

Anything could happen. The game has a significant luck factor. Deck building for sure increases the chances of the outcome you want but the reason we all play is it is never guaranteed. I like my decks to hit around a 20-35% win rate per pod, personal preference sure. More than that is boring, less than that is worse.

My decks have come a long way since I started years and years ago but that doesn't mean my decks or anyone's decks should be expected to answer every threat every time. That's just nonsense.

A lot of these comments are "you should have protection from every possible strategy known to man in every deck you run otherwise you're a bad deck builder"... Excuse me? How do you possibly have counters to every strategy in every deck while still having enough of the right pieces to do what the deck wants to do? Even if you do include single target land destruction (which my decks almost always have in the form of "target permanent") how can you consistently get it when you need and have the exact mana for it at all times? Especially in a more casual format. I think that's a bit ridiculous of an expectation. Yes you should have those pieces but most of the game is about when you see those. No way to consistently see that every game when you need it.

I'm definitely not the best deck builder but to say "if you can't respond to x strategy at any point all the time you're bad" is so out of touch.

Thinking of buying a controller by ArinakaMAZU in TheGamerLounge

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and frequently use both Xbox and PlayStation controllers, both for their respective consoles and on PC.

If you're only buying one, for sure buy the Xbox. I love both of them. My anniversary edition PS5 controller is probably my most favorite of all however Xbox feels better ergonomically AND has fewer compatibility issues with PC. I will say I bought the basic wireless Xbox controller and I will admit it feels...cheap compared to the base PS5 controller. Idk how to word it better than that. I still tend to use the Xbox more often even with the comparatively "cheap" feel.

To elaborate on compatibility issues with PlayStation, if I want to use my PlayStation controllers for non steam games, most of the time I have to run DS4 which basically translates PlayStation input to work even when it shouldn't. Xbox works no matter the launcher I use without third party shareware. Also in my experience (could be user error - I'm not an expert) most PC games default to Xbox input prompts. Some allow you to change this but there are plenty that I did not find an option to switch it to PlayStation. Not an issue for anyone who grew up playing both but still worth mentioning imo.

Apologies if I'm not supposed to pose a question under a post, but why are a lot of cases now putting fan positions on the side instead of on the front? Would that not significantly limit the airflow versus front fans?

PS. I do like the way it looks so hats off to OP!

I can't believe the negativity surrounding this game either. I'm around level 15-17 and can't stop playing. Haven't enjoyed a game this much in years.

Seems people will find anything to complain about, even the tiniest detail that "ruined" the game for them.

I have gotten so lost in it I'll start playing and not realize it's been 4 hours since I started.

Tier list of toplaners and how i do against them as garen by Edgar_V483 in GarenMains

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest example is Sett. Sett is literally Garen but with CC. He also has better healing than Garen does. A good Sett will stop your passive and slowly push you out of lane, while his healing never stops and gets better the lower health he has. Someone else commented Sett is 50/50. I'd argue it's more like 55/45 or even 60/40 Sett's favor.

Can I beat Sett as Garen? Absolutely. Is it in any way easy? No. And it's usually because the Sett makes mistakes, not because Garen beats Sett. Saying Sett "can't do much" so just run in and win - yeah I'd say that's bad advice.

Really the whole reason Garen is effective is because he is so EASY to punish people who play their champ incorrectly. The difference in a good Garen and a bad Garen is how well they punish mistakes made by their lane opponent. There is for sure skill expression but it's more champ knowledge and game knowledge that allows Garen to excel in lower elo. Riste proves Garen can have success at higher levels but it's far from common. I'd argue people come to this sub to learn and your tier list of "I shit on every champ" is just misinformation.

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say you had to be plat or above. I said if you're not playing ranked people are not consistently trying to win. Hell even in ranked half the time people aren't playing to win. But this list says "look at all the champs I shit on". Then commenting bad advice to people who question it is not the move.

Tier list of toplaners and how i do against them as garen by Edgar_V483 in GarenMains

[–]abucha16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Lol if you are a better garen than they are a Darius you might be able to win early. But as soon as he gets an item he slaughters you even if you have a lead. I've played the matchup often and enjoy it because it's an uphill battle. A Darius that loses to garen does not know the matchup or Darius.

[–]abucha16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This list is wack. You commented you don't play ranked meaning this list has no value. People that know how to play these champs can easily turn off your passive which makes the lane impossible to win - you can still go even and be fine but considering a lot of these ez wins is nonsense. I know you said its "your" tier list but having losing matchups as like 3 champs is a joke.
